At least the latter not deliberately misunderstanding stuff, but building up their perception of it on reactions of others.
I'd never say people shouldn't have fun with pop culture however they want. But I'll keep my right of finding it quite irritating and annoying.

I don't think it's always deliberate. If you have people pointing at sth going 'Haha, that's weird!', you'll have people taking that as reference and think 'Well, I reckon that's weird.'
