relevant video, includes the point that right-wingers in the USA got fed a ton of misinfo/propaganda lies [log scale graph at the end]

aye, but they can move/reallocate power, so I wouldn't be surprised to see that

or even e.g. GE clients getting shafted, similar to the masks getting redirected for “national security”

stupid money, that's what it is; i am most certainly not defending the eejits, merely diagnosing them
lbruno.org
honestly feel a bit weird, got questioned so closely for making an argument which i thought was straightforward

and i just realised i'm making the same argument as _The Innovators' Dilemma_ where companies retreat up-market where the margins are higher

it's even less novel than i thought at 1st
lbruno.org
aye, and that i agree with

just that the competitiveness isn't there in the USA specifically, since* trump 2. if renewables are off the table, higher margins ensue

*: even from before, when dems-in-name-only killed IRAr2 and its renewables during tail-end of Biden
lbruno.org
does it even matter? as in, the original argument was: there's more profit in generating non-renewables, hence finance will chase those, to the point where they've already killed renewables in the USA via lobbying
lbruno.org
combine that w/ how they lobbied trump successfully to kill renewables that were coming online w/ IRAr2, and you get a tilted playing field where the only power generation available is the expensive one

30% margin on $5k > than 50% margin on $1k, that was the idea

? what do you mean by evidence? i'm saying that if the same 1GW of power has a sales price that wildly differs depending on source, the margin/profit also scales accordingly

wiki has a graph, but that's not the crux: even between coal/gas you have prices ranging from $2k to $6k to produce 1kW

“““
If you do direct payments, people will consume more, as we learned during Covid.
”””

yep, i'm listening to an eejit: covid stimulus checks were spent on paying back debt, overwhelmingly so

this guy parcap-punto-com guy has no clue
lbruno.org
aye, but the guy redirected masks; i'd not be surprised by seeing assets moved/redirected as well

he's not above depriving NY from electricity, for instance
lbruno.org
i agree w/ all that; what i'm talking about [i elided a few words, blame insomnia] is that, for an investor seeking returns, there's more margin in hydrocarbons than solar

specifically caused by the fact these are cheaper sources of power
lbruno.org
from a finance guy:

“““
Meanwhile, the rest of the world produces too much, then demands that America consumes it. They’ve bought our bonds to finance this consumption
”””

and who issued those “our bonds”? also, who holds those bonds, percent-wise?

staggering majority are held by rich Americans
lbruno.org
not really, i had to stop following her back during the initial Gaza timeframe because, apart from being correct re: Gaza \, she had mental episodes of implausible/malicious misunderstanding people

and then went full “i'm a white American woman on the internet being harassed” at the drop of a hat
lbruno.org
i get deeply embarrassed when propaganda trips me, and very very annoyed when i catch it -- it's terrible for my health

i'd call it propaganda: we're way past the “1st time is an accident, 2nd coincidence, 3rd is enemy action” pipeline: we have actual enemies taking purposeful action against us
lbruno.org
i would be very very annoyed at a company which fucked me over this way
gwollman.bsky.social
UNFORTUNATELY, while Congress allows the Berne bare minimum -- a suit for actual damages -- it made both statutory damages and attorney's fees conditional on registration either prior to the infringement, or within three months of publication if the infringement happened immediately at publication.

what folks are missing [i think?] is that cheap power sources just don't have the margin in absolute value to be attractive:

e.g. if the same 1GW costs $1 from solar vs $2 from hydrocarbons, there's gonna be a lot more margin on the latter

and stupid money chases profits
klocktower.org
In terms of profitability, sure. But as I understand it, a lot of solar fields are owned by relatively small, local producers, including local utilities. The amount of capital, and thus the lobbying capacity, isn’t anywhere near what the carbon-fueled industries are rocking.

oh man, that reminds me that Kissinger's dead ;)
lbruno.org
they can do that OTC in the USA as well -- i do know that parties to such have to be qualified investors, maybe that's what's stopping them in the USA and not over here: restrictions on whom they can target?
lbruno.org
oh absolutely, it's just a twitch i have these days whenever i see an etsy link: i assumed i had bought a joke gadsden flag from someone aligned politically w/ me, now i have this traumatic reflex
lbruno.org
i'm reminded of how both Mandela and the Suffragettes got sprayed as terrorists
lbruno.org
my face when i learnt i ordered a funny patch from a trumpet -- in other words, now i check profusely before buying

not saying that's the case here, just sharing trauma
lbruno.org
the population of Russia doesn't have a say in the matter at all, that's the point
lbruno.org
no worries, i have no need to know it

it's one of those cases where i ask a proxy question without thinking: “have you been on air?” because i had forgotten your country has the tech level

but instead of asking that, i used the proxy question for some unthinking reason; it's a pattern i fall into
