‘Nite, peeps. This is as good a place as any to find your soft landing after *quite* a week—William Lawes, Harp Consort No. 5 in D major.

It’s your four-minute breather away from everything, and a dose of calm distilled from order, light, and grace.

“Night of the homeless, the sleepless, night of those winding the watches of their souls…”
Reading a fascinating & peculiar book by Charles Simic: Dime Store Alchemy, The Art of Joseph Cornell.
Best read slowly, occasionally aloud.

Book cover “Dime Store Alchemy, The Art of Joseph Cornell” by Charles Simic. Cover photo is an assemblage by Joseph Cornell:

The composition is in a wooden box. At the center of the box is an image of a young girl, often interpreted as a ballet dancer. This figure is a reproduction from Pablo Picasso's 1905 painting, Family of Saltimbanques, referencing Cornell's interest in the performing arts.
The girl is placed amidst a collection of colorful rings, balls, and wooden spheres. These elements give the impression of celestial orbits, linking the young dancer to a planetary system.
In the upper right is the word, “Appolinaris.” From _Dime Store Alchemy_:

I’m looking for the mechanical chess player with a red turban.
I hear Pythagoras is there queuing up, and Monsieur Pascal, who hears the silence inside God's ear.
Eternity and time are the coins it requires, everybody's portion of it, for a quick glimpse of that everything which is nothing.
Night of the homeless, the sleepless, night of those winding the watches of their souls, the stopped watches, before the machine with mirrors.
Here's a raised hand covered with dime-store jewels, a hand like "a five-headed Cerberus," and two eyes opened wide in astonishment.

Since his nephew was a prime suspect, could that mean Leclair was slain by a…relative minor?

Right?! That’s a gut-punch. 😢

No?!?! Seriously RIP?! And yes on Annie Hall.

I’m so glad!! 😁 That tension he creates with his sense of line contour, those crazy-impossible virtuosic passages, treading the line between order and yearning in everything he wrote—it’s like Baroque crack!
Shimmers *and* simmers, if that’s possible…

This is fabulous!!

I’m so glad you liked it — Leclair wrote such achingly beautiful works.

This week in counterpoint class, I described partimenti as the “instant ramen” of Western music: everything you need for a delicious meal is right there in the package 🍜

Sometimes I forget to type "coli" when googling genes.

This time instead of finding search results for the transcription factor yidZ, I got a kosher B&B in Illinois and a "Judean Drip" instagram.
