I use the word “queer” because it is political and encompasses my experiences without outing anybody else in my life. It tells fellow queers everything they need to know and leaves gossipy nobodies to keep guessing. I don’t like the term nonbinary because I refuse to believe a binary even exists.

There were always fears that gay parents would raise gay children, and I wanted to prove those haters wrong. But I began questioning my gender and sexuality in about 6th grade. I have always had anger towards our community’s pressure on “coming out” as if it’s a simple before/after scenario.

There were times in my childhood when our family as a whole had to remain closeted. And during times when we weren’t closeted, I felt as though my home life was just fodder for gossip. Because of both of those things, I’m quite reserved when it comes to discussing my own sexuality in public.

Coming out when you’re the child of gay parents probably sounds like an ideal scenario, and of course it does have its privileges, but it’s also a complex story. I’d like to write about it at length one day, further than what I’ve put into zines or written online.
