One of my favourite photos from this year: the juvenile Grey Heron

This youngster dropped down at the edge of the lake, just a short distance from where I was stood photographing Reed warblers.

A juvenile grey heron close up, in profile. The bird is facing to the right. Its soft grey feathers are backlit adding a warm glow to the edges. The background is green bulrushes.

😊 they are. They’re such brave little babies

One from the spring: this exceptionally cute gosling’s parents are Egyptian Geese. You always know that spring is just around the corner as these little babies are usually the first hatchlings of the year. This one is from April, but I’ve regularly seen them in early February. #birds #ukwildlife

Hahaha, just don’t lose your balance and fall over. Enjoy them (and the break).

They’re not rare, but not overly common in the UK either. This is the drake. But in summer after breeding, the male also looks like the female but with a different colour bill

Very nice Nick. Are you off on your holibobs? Looks like you’re getting some lovely birds.

Oh such a shame. They’re all around me (Hampshire), so if you’re ever back over here give me a shout I’d be happy to show you/share good locations.

Thanks Steve. They’re so fantastic as they turn. I need to get to higher ground again for the banking shots, as their tails look fabulous then.

One of my local Red Kites (Milvus Milvus) flying above for a daily check-in. #birds

🤣 it’s amazing how quickly we can descend down a rabbit hole. I often do it and end up realising I know a little about a lot, but not a lot about anything 🤣

Yeah, completely different to vultures. It’s sometimes caused confusion on BlueSky before so I try to (when I remember at least) add the Latin name when posting about them now.

Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) - this angle really shows off how chunky they are #birds

Such a beautiful yet powerful bird ❤️

Thanks, it really was. I was photographing jackdaws initially, but then the magpies flew in and I just kept my head down and the camera at my eye to enjoy them. Really had to constrain my laughter though.

It was fascinating to watch. I wasn’t sure if he was trying to impress a potential mate or protect a territory. It didn’t seem to do either of those things if so 😆
