One of my favourite photos from this year: the juvenile Grey Heron

This youngster dropped down at the edge of the lake, just a short distance from where I was stood photographing Reed warblers.

A juvenile grey heron close up, in profile. The bird is facing to the right. Its soft grey feathers are backlit adding a warm glow to the edges. The background is green bulrushes.

Oh such a shame. They’re all around me (Hampshire), so if you’re ever back over here give me a shout I’d be happy to show you/share good locations.

Thanks Steve. They’re so fantastic as they turn. I need to get to higher ground again for the banking shots, as their tails look fabulous then.

One of my local Red Kites (Milvus Milvus) flying above for a daily check-in. #birds

🤣 it’s amazing how quickly we can descend down a rabbit hole. I often do it and end up realising I know a little about a lot, but not a lot about anything 🤣

Yeah, completely different to vultures. It’s sometimes caused confusion on BlueSky before so I try to (when I remember at least) add the Latin name when posting about them now.

Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) - this angle really shows off how chunky they are #birds

Such a beautiful yet powerful bird ❤️

Thanks, it really was. I was photographing jackdaws initially, but then the magpies flew in and I just kept my head down and the camera at my eye to enjoy them. Really had to constrain my laughter though.

It was fascinating to watch. I wasn’t sure if he was trying to impress a potential mate or protect a territory. It didn’t seem to do either of those things if so 😆

Possibly the worlds funniest Eurasian Magpie #birds

This Buzzard is quite a unit ❤️ #birds

Fortunately, here I’m more then the 50m away, with a large pond between us- but when they look at you like this, you also need to check your back. There may be another stag behind you -& you never want to get caught between two males, or a male and his hinds. Back for another visit on Thursday 🤞🏻

It really is. They’re very fast, incredibly strong & pumped full of testosterone right now. It’s hard to maintain the distance sometimes, as there can be lots of them in one place & you need your wits about you. I don’t fancy getting caught on the receiving end of those antlers - at all.
logicaphotography.bsky.social
😆 thank you. I love it when their antlers are adorned like this. And he was posing/flirting for me even though I was a huge distance away.

Red Deer stag - Looking like he’s just stepped out of a salon #ukwildlife
logicaphotography.bsky.social
😆 they’re like little fireworks whizzing in different directions

They are definitely tricky as they turn so quickly. It needs speed, good panning and a > f stop based on my culls 🤣 . I chanced on a spot where there were 5 flying. I don’t think any of us could believe our luck. Hopefully they’ll be back next year - as it’s apx midway between our locations.
