Hi! I am an economic and social historian with broad, interdisciplinary interests that need a thread. C19th local government finance, business history, co-operative education, and queer print are my principal preoccupations; there are others. 1/

I am still getting my head around the fact he was in NY for the North American première of DG, flogging libretti, as I only learned this when I read his memoirs not so long ago.

I thought of Dürer's Rhino - had any of them been to a five-star hotel? It has seen better days, but staff working v. hard to make it special. Full of people having a seaside holiday of an Edwardian type, and I could feel myself being seduced like Castorp. Going in January is probably dead cheap...

I stayed there – in a much more modest room – for a Glyndebourne visit this summer. Apparently, the first five-star star seaside hotel, it has an offbeat, charming, slightly fawlty-towers vibe. One of the best room service breakfasts I've ever had and definitely the most beautifully presented.

At the bank I was told "pick your four digit pincode but it can't be a year." "Aren't they all years?" I asked. We sat in silence for a bit.

Your challenge for this weekend is to put in an abstract for Queer Bibliography 2026. It's what all the cool kids are doing.

The theme is Space, Place, Community (widely understood, certainly not limited to the South). CFP: shorturl.at/XAVJ0; Submit: forms.gle/XD7FgrrStp3j...

Athens GA and online

Mrs A. Miconi,

Blackheath,

Dear Madam,
We thank you for your letter and payment of £3.80, received on 21st March.
Before proceeding, we must whether you would agree to a slight wording amenament of the wording in order that the advertising conforms to our normal style. The words "Socialist feninist" we would prefer to read "Friendly, motherly," thereby allowing the wording to conform.
We now look forward to your further instructions, whilst advising you that our next issue is 7th April for which we close for press upon receipt of the first post Tuesday 29th March.

"No more than a liter of wine a day" - In the early 1950s, when French wine consumption was 140+ liters/capita, France launched the campaign "Santé Sobriété" to limit alcohol consumption. In 1954, Philippe Foré became the chief designer. #WineHistory`

A literary Iguanodon at the Earth Sciences Library. Do any other libraries have dinosaurs or other antediluvian creatures carved into the furniture?

I had forgotten how haunted the Xavier Sabata Winterreise is. The lieder equivalent of MR James.
