When we enter a person's space, there is always something we can do to negotiate with our words, our tone, our body language and through gentle touch. This is part of seeking permission, involvement, about inclusion and connection.

It's in our power to enable, provide scaffolding & meet a person where they are
People say mum lacks capacity, but given the space, she can intone, has facial expression & bodily tension. Which is why when someone comes into her space ....

Positive enabling things we can do
Negotiate!
When a person's capacity fluctuates or as some people say when "they lack capacity" I like to ask, "with what?"
We can never know what a person is thinking & therefore how much capacity they have ....

A thought today about #space in #carehomes. Where do residents spend their day? Do they really have a #choice? You can go in the garden...if the weather is nice. You can go to the lounge...but it's too noisy. You can go to your bedroom...who hosts guests in their bedroom?

In the #carehome early & met a nightshift carer who told me that a gentleman had been tearful, happy tears, tapping his feet, when listening to a song being played as he was assisted with care. It warms my heart knowing the power of #music but also that people #notice people
