They put protocols in place for me and made sure that I had the best possible chance of having children when I came out the other side."

Mark, we are so happy for you and your family!
“And my family... I now have a daughter, Isla. We’ll be celebrating her first birthday in October thanks to the efforts from the Mater Hospital staff.
Thankfully, almost three years later, Mark has been given a clean bill of health. He shared some wonderful news with us recently...
Mark shares, “What struck me even more was that I might not be able to have kids. I’d have to freeze my sperm before I started treatment. That was nearly worse.
When Mark was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, he was utterly stunned. No more sports, no more work, and what of his family?

it’s about looking out for each other and making sure men get the care they need. We’ll be there, goosebumps and all, and we want as many lads as possible to join us," Morning Glory co-host Jim McCabe says of doing the Dip again.
"There aren’t many occasions where you can say standing starkers on a beach with a bow tie is doing good for mankind – but this is one of them. The Dickie Dip is about more than just the craic (though Lord knows there’s an awful lot of craic on show!)

This is crap, but it’s not going to define who I am. The anger I felt at my diagnosis gave me the determination to beat the cancer."

“Playing sport is a big outlet for me. I wasn’t going to let my diagnosis stop me from living my life. It took a little while to build my stamina and strength back up, but I wasn’t going to just sit around because of it. That was my mantra from day one.
That was nearly three years ago. Recently, Mark shared with us that he is back to 100% himself and playing sports again. It was a chapter of his life he feels lucky to have gotten through.
“I thought I was only going up to Dublin for a quick check-up and then I was getting admitted and starting chemo straight away."
Mark shares his experience, “I felt like I was dreaming. I didn’t know what was going on. In that moment, I just couldn’t comprehend it. I wasn’t going to be able to play sports anymore. I may never be able to work again.
Meet Mark 👋

Mark is a GAA sports-mad, Wexford man constantly on the move. At least he was, until he heard the words, "We have bad news."

Mark was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, a type of blood cancer.
You can help make care not just life-saving — but life-changing.

Knowledge is power — especially when you’re facing prostate surgery.

Consultant Greg Nason explains how a suite of videos have been made to support prostate surgical patients pre, during & post-op. The team's aim is to 'Empower Surgery Patients in Self-Care’.
From the very beginning, the Mater has been powered by the extraordinary kindness of the people of Ireland. And today, you continue that same spirit of generosity passed down through generations of caring hearts.
Sister Catherine McAuley made it her mission to open a hospital that cared for all, or as she put it, "somewhere the sick and poor could go without having to know someone or pay money."
In 1820, and the death rate in Dublin was the highest in all Europe. If you were poor and you or your child became sick, your chances of survival were thin — it was as simple and brutal as that.
