This is crap, but it’s not going to define who I am. The anger I felt at my diagnosis gave me the determination to beat the cancer."

You can help patients like Mark and support men's cancer care by taking part in this year's Dickie Dip.
“Playing sport is a big outlet for me. I wasn’t going to let my diagnosis stop me from living my life. It took a little while to build my stamina and strength back up, but I wasn’t going to just sit around because of it. That was my mantra from day one.
That was nearly three years ago. Recently, Mark shared with us that he is back to 100% himself and playing sports again. It was a chapter of his life he feels lucky to have gotten through.
“I thought I was only going up to Dublin for a quick check-up and then I was getting admitted and starting chemo straight away."
Mark shares his experience, “I felt like I was dreaming. I didn’t know what was going on. In that moment, I just couldn’t comprehend it. I wasn’t going to be able to play sports anymore. I may never be able to work again.
Meet Mark 👋

Mark is a GAA sports-mad, Wexford man constantly on the move. At least he was, until he heard the words, "We have bad news."

Mark was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, a type of blood cancer.
You can help make care not just life-saving — but life-changing.

Knowledge is power — especially when you’re facing prostate surgery.

Consultant Greg Nason explains how a suite of videos have been made to support prostate surgical patients pre, during & post-op. The team's aim is to 'Empower Surgery Patients in Self-Care’.
From the very beginning, the Mater has been powered by the extraordinary kindness of the people of Ireland. And today, you continue that same spirit of generosity passed down through generations of caring hearts.
Sister Catherine McAuley made it her mission to open a hospital that cared for all, or as she put it, "somewhere the sick and poor could go without having to know someone or pay money."
In 1820, and the death rate in Dublin was the highest in all Europe. If you were poor and you or your child became sick, your chances of survival were thin — it was as simple and brutal as that.
Your hospital, a history 🩺

In the 1800's, Ireland is gripped by poverty and disease. Witnessing the suffering of people, Sister Catherine McAuley begins work on her dream for a hospital for the people. 164 years later, her vision lives on in every life you help save…

Tom continues, “I’ve been lucky enough to see the last couple of Dickie Dips first hand, working as part of the team here at the Foundation. That sense of camaraderie, brotherhood and solidarity with those gents who’ve experienced cancer in their lives…
“What would my Dad think? Well, he'd definitely tell us we are mad fools to be charging into the sea at that time of year, but he'd be pleased as punch that his memory is helping others." Tom is taking part in the Dickie Dip this year to honour his late father Paddy.
it’s about supporting everything else the patient is carrying. Their fears, their family, their identity.”

Led by compassionate professionals like Sinead, our Psycho-Oncology service — funded in part by kindness like yours — provides essential care to people living with cancer.
