If the extreme right wins again on 29 October, this is what we must try to hold on to. Rather than relying on left wing parties and media, we should foster a culture of protest and direct action and build networks of solidarity. After last Sunday, I am starting to have a sense that we could do it.

Yet, a growing number of people have had enough of it. In the past years we have also seen an increase in activist engagement: more people are taking to the streets, voicing their support for Palestine, for decolonization, antifascism, climate justice - and against capitalism and patriarchy.

Throughout the past decades, the extreme right has been on the rise in this country - to such an extent that their message has become all but mainstream at this point. In some weeks there will be new general elections, and various extreme right parties combined may easily win one third of the seats.

Yesterday 250.000 people assembled in Amsterdam to protest the complicity of the Dutch government with the genocide in Gaza. This amounts to 1.4% of the country's entire population. We were there to show our solidarity with the Palestinians, but this massive turn-out also conveys something else.

Wat opvalt: men heeft het vaak over hoe influencers als Andrew Tate de jeugd vergiftigen met seksistische ideeën, maar deze daders zijn van alle leeftijden. De enige overeenkomst is dat het allemaal mannen zijn. Niet een specifieke 'online cultuur' maar het patriarchaat is de structurele oorzaak.

De komende verkiezingen zijn nog wel vrije verkiezingen: eenmaal in het stemhokje kun je doen wat je wil. Maar, gezien de volstrekt eenzijdige media-aandacht, zijn het allang geen eerlijke verkiezingen meer. En de media zelf zijn wel de allerlaatste plek waar dat feit gemoemd zal worden.
