Maduro won all elections with the exception of the last one in 2024. There was no credible story in 2012. My take in 2018 here www.aljazeera.com/amp/opinions...
Venezuela is about to explode
Under increasing pressure from the US and its allies, Venezuela might be on the verge of a bloody coup.

It’s not about keeping us safe from criminals. This is ethnic cleansing.

📹 “Está bien, amigo. No estoy enojada contigo”: el vídeo grabado por el agente del ICE que disparó a Renee Good en Minneapolis escala la crisis en Estados Unidos social.elpais.com/rwj…

Always because of fiscal stimulus. During the Korean and Vietnamese wars and more recently because of Biden’s package that was so criticized by establishment Dems like Summers. At any rate, it’s clearly moving again in the wrong direction

Wrong conclusion, after a good thread. One needs to look at the housing market, since that’s one of the main channels through which the Fed affects demand. The graph shows the decline in private housing fixed investment. Only a few times that became negative and we avoided a recession

Still that doesn’t address the affordability crisis, and Trump and the GOP will pay an electoral price for that

If Trump goes on to expand the defense budget by 500 billion the economy might escape a recession. Not a good measure. Many more relevant ways to spend money, like on health, research (although some defense money goes into that), etc. But it may do the work

The economy is slowing down (and the job market is worse than numbers indicate). But a recession is far from certain. Many predicted it as a result of tariffs. As I noted that was unlikely. The Fed rates (too high) and the lack of fiscal stimulus are the issue
A recession-bound US economy added only 50,000 jobs in Dec and a meager 584,000 jobs in all of 2025. That’s the worst year for job gains outside of a recession since 2003. And nearly 85% of the job gains happened by April. Unemployment: 4.4% in Dec, up from 4% in Jan. 3.8% wage growth in 2025.

Let alone that people are dying in custody (32 in 2025) for minor issues (immigration status) or being killed in the streets, like today in Minneapolis

Not just that. Add to this that the prison population rate (per 100,000) is 199 in Venezuela and about 542 in the US. A much more repressive system

The book has also a chapter I co-wrote on monetary policy in the region

Oil production and exports are directly connected to economic growth in Venezuela. This shows the effects of US sanctions. From the chapter by Francisco Rodriguez and Michael Penfold in the @elgarpublishing.bsky.social companion to the economies of the region

The Supreme Court ruled that Trump cannot deploy the national guard for civilian law enforcement in Illinois, marking the greatest judicial check on Trump’s power to date. Robert Kuttner reports on curbing executive authority:

The Supreme Court found Trump’s federalizing of the National Guard in and around Chicago illegal. Let’s hope the ruling is the beginning of a trend.
