However, better education for women and providing access to reproductive healthcare would be (relatively) easy ways to improve people’s lives and at the same time slow down population growth further.

In a low-fertility scenarion, which is close to what we have observed in recent years, global population could already peak in the 2050s at about 8.7 billion people and decline to 7.3 billion by the end of the century (see figure in the comments).

Whereas in the past decades it took about 12 years to add one billion people to the global population, the UN projects that increasing today’s 8 billion people to 9 billion will take 14 years (until 2037), and that the 10 billion mark will only be crossed after a further 21 years (in 2058).

During the second half of the 20th century, the global population grew roughly 2% per year but in the first two decades of the 21st century, population growth was about 1.2% per year. Carbon emissions per capita have already peaked in 2011.

Reasons for climate optimism – part 10

The world’s population is expected to peak before the end of the century, making it easier to provide clean energy for all and reducing the need for adaptation.

Rich nations’ historical responsibility for climate damages as well as their responsibility to support mitigation and adaptation in other countries is increasingly recognized. This can incentivize governments to cooperate on climate issues.
