Recent south polar warmth (negative AAO → SAM; gradually easing) has pushed westerlies further north, and produced a wavier jet stream pattern with persistent mid-latitude cold and warm anomalies. Which longitudes are cold/warm is governed by planetary waves.

In New South Wales max. temperatures yesterday >35C and today tropical nights in some areas.
In fact, the minimum of 20.4C at Mount Seaview is the highest ever recorded in October.
