Repeat of what I posted on LinkedIn on Thursday, but worth putting out there for BlueSky too. A thread.. 🧵

February is Black History Month in Canada. It started yesterday, February 1. This shouldn't be your reminder that we have #BHM, but it might be and I'm going to help you out. 1/

For >10 years I’ve been on an admissions committee for a prominent science journalism fellowship.

We always have around 150 applications from around the world to review for 6 spots.

This year we only had 32 applications. And several we can’t review because they’re visa restricted now.

I wonder if faculty mental health would be boosted if we were all given the option to load up all our teaching in one crazy busy semester per year, leaving the other as essentially a mini-sabbatical (i know i know, service commitments would still be there). #AcademicChat 🧪

Excellent! Maybe they could explain why tickets purchased on the app only have a week shelf life but paper tickets last forever.

Maybe something to bring up in the next FoS council meeting

Actual classes. Here at UofC, 4 is the standard although most would teach 3.

that's an excellent point

This is a really good map.

Yeah that probably adds up to about the same as here, assuming 3hrs/week for ~13 weeks for most courses and most (research track) faculty teach something like 3-4 courses per year.
February 2, 2026 at 5:39 PM
Yeah I know some people who get to do that, but I just don't understand why it's not the same for everyone, assuming teaching schedules could be accommodated.

Is 5-6 weeks considered a lot? Is that 9-5 every day?
February 2, 2026 at 5:30 PM
I've always thought of myself as someone who could squeeze in a little writing or analyses here and there when I had a 30 minute block, but being on sabbatical the past month has made me realize how uninterrupted days can make a monumental difference in productivity and happiness.

I don't understand why this isn't more standard (maybe it is in UK?). Maybe teaching loads are higher here?

I really wish journals would publish more of this sort of thing. Not everything needs to be earth shattering/novel/whatever. Maybe someone should start a Journal of Earth Non-Shattering Stuff.

But as others have pointed out, if the alternative is a preprint server, perhaps it's not an unreasonable option

I will not submit a paper there if I am first author and will work to convince the lead author if I am not. Same with Frontiers.

And sorely lacking in almost every Canadian city. Neighbourhood bars were something that I really liked about living in the US.
These kinds of human scale, mixed-use Midwest dive bars are illegal to open and operate in most American neighborhoods.
