Kimmel getting reinstated was likely in part due to public backlash against his cancellation. Even some conservative voices condemned the government's overeach, which shows this is a bipartisan issue, and the result shows that, even if the U.S. are indeed very far gone, they can still push back.
mittovac.bsky.social
Shutting down public voices and controlling information is a classic tool with which fascist institutions build up power.

It's important the U.S. starts seriously looking at what's happening to them, and other countriesstay vigilant as well, cause it can happen anywhere.
mittovac.bsky.social
The state should not exert control over what the media can & can't say unless we're talking specific exceptions to free speech such as hate speech.

Whether you like the people being targeted & what they say or not, the government directly influencing the media is bad for everyone.
mittovac.bsky.social
Let's be clear, what happened to Jimmy Kimmel (and was thankfully rolled back) is not a case of "freedom of speech isn't freedom from consequences."

If Disney, Nexstar & Sinclair had cancelled Kimmel over pressure from the public, that would be one thing, but the pressure came from the government.

May it be music, art, writing, localization or any other creative field: no one wants your AI slop.
ocremix.org
We don’t want AI slop.
Stop sending us AI slop.
Stop wasting our time with AI slop.
It doesn’t sound good.
It’s antithetical to our core values.
You didn’t even make it.
Knock it off.

Ooooh, I see. Good to know, but again, a weird way to circumvent a weird issue that could, by the way, be fixed by simply making sure the corpse always spawns outside the boss arena.
mittovac.bsky.social
Does quitting recover your corpse? That would be good to know, yet I still feel my point is valid. It's not something the game teaches you. It doesn't feel like an intended mechanic, rather a fix because the corpse run is, in my opinion, more of a hinderance than a good mechanic.
mittovac.bsky.social
The corpse run was always the one part of Hollow Knight I wasn't a fan of. In a game with SO MANY branching paths and optional challenges, having a mechanic that pushes you to constantly return to the place you died seems counter to the free exploration the rest of the game encourages.

Savage Beastfly fucked my day up, but I struggle with bosses that summon adds, that's just my weakness 😅

I do want to push back on "come back later if it's too hard", as that's iffy when I have a bunch of beads in a cocoon too far in the boss arena to recover without retriggering the fight 🤷‍♂️

Okay I just fought the Savage Beastfly and I'm not gonna mince words, some of you are pathetic. If I fought this boss without hearing anything I would have been like "oh what a fun, kinda hard boss", but hearing the DISCOURSE like Y'ALL... HE HAS TWO ATTACKS. HE HAS *TWO ATTACKS*

Repeat after us: 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀.

• Nothing is linear
• You often get the texts in disarray
• Different UIs, menus, dialog styles mean different contexts
• Also no one can translate more than 2-3k words a day without sacrificing quality, proofreading & LQA.
locdandloaded.net
Sometimes I wonder why people say Reddit is a cesspool.

Then I read things like this, and I get it.
Quoted from Reddit: "Translation for a game like this is not a big project. There's like a light novel worth of text. One person could do it in a week. They should just have it redone. It wouldn't cost much.

I'm a professional Japanese translator. Hollow Knight had 20000 words of straightforward dialogue. That's about 40 pages. Even if Silksong has twice as much, that's possible to do in a day."

It's such a deeply depressing reflection of our industry that shows that NO GAME, no matter how it's made, is immune to localization being treated as an afterthought despite the fact that it impacts the experience of literal millions of players.
mittovac.bsky.social
I'm playing & loving Silksong, but there's no excuse for a game of this caliber, legacy, hype & passion to have localized versions in such a state.

@teamcherry.bsky.social, you worked hard to make the 7-year wait worth it for players. A shame that care doesn't extend to international audiences.
fromthevoid.net
Localization 101: someone being able to speak a language doesn't automatically become a translator.

Localization 201: dear @teamcherry.bsky.social, if you decide to hire a fan for your game, show respect to your players by at least adding a 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙛𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 proofreader to the mix 🤍💫
tortegatrad.bsky.social
I'm still in the first act of the game, but yes, the amount of errors I've seen that would've been caught just with basic proofreading is, unfortunately, quite high. More examples below (spoilers for very early-game content, mistakes explained in ALT)
mittovac.bsky.social
. @teamcherry.bsky.social spent 7 years polishing Silksong to no end, yet so far we learned both the Chinese and French localizations have been botched.

Loc is an afterthought even in some of the most lovingly crafted titles. It's so fucking sad.

Whole audiences who can't enjoy your labor of love.

The debate about Silksong's Chinese localization has the merit of showing devs and publishers that the quality of your localization 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 to players.

Even if we'd have prefered it didn't turn into the witch hunt it seems to have become...

This is what Palworld's Communications Director had to say on the matter. As of the time of posting, they have yet to follow-up on those questions. (Source: www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...)

Pocketpair decided to go AI. To no professional's surprise, the result is terrible. English to Vietnamese game localizer Phú Trần made these slides to show how bad it is.

How many more fiascos before we can stop this AI nonsense?
"On June 26th, a new update added 6 new languages into Palworld.
However, there are no credits for any individual or company who worked on these particular languages (and only these).
The devs also use AI to translate bug reports on their official Discord." A screenshot of Palworld's menu, with notes by Phu Tran saying that everything is literally translated in Vietnamese and that no game menu should be this verbose (all texts in the menu are, indeed, extremely long). A screenshot of the "Technology" tab in game. Notes from Phu Tran say that "Technology" is wrongly translated "Technique" in Vietnamese. There's also a line break mid-sentence in some description text: an easy tell when someone copy-pasted from an AI chat box. Another word is translated "Observatory", which doesn't refer to anything we can see on screen. Another screenshot of an in game menu. About the translation of items called "Mega Sphere" & "Mega Shield" in the source text, Phu Tran says: "it is painfully clear that the AI couldn't tell the difference between a shield called Mega and a giant shield, so it mixed up the two, and ended up getting every shield name in the tech tree wrong."
