The fact that Star Trek IV (the one with the whales) came out the following year really cemented humpbacks as important to my generation, I think. I'll bet a significant portion of marine biologists owe their careers to that wayward whale and all the effort that hairless apes put in to save him.

It's been 40 years since Humphrey the Whale first came to the Bay. He was a huge celebrity (literally & figuratively) to kids like me, and I still think about him from time to time. Did he go on to have a good life? Did he have kids, and did he tell them spooky stories about us?
