My personal response to the propagandistic & defamatory New York Times article on Psymposia @psymposia.bsky.social, which violated the Times' editorial standards. This transparently partisan attack politicized whistleblowers to appeal to the Trump administration on behalf of a pharmaceutical company
It's disappointing — but not surprising — that journalists with close ties to MAPS have resorted to such a transparently partisan political attack. This piece is an opportunistic attempt to politicize whistleblowers with a narrative that appeals to the Trump administration. While Jacobs and Nuwer attack Psymposia and me personally, they have failed to refute our core claims, which remain important and unrebutted. To be clear, their attacks are flatly incorrect and underscore their desperation to distract from the real story: that MAPS’s handling of its clinical trials was a disaster, and that Lykos is in financial disarray.

To obscure this fact, the article offered a caricature of my research and of Psymposia's broader work in the field. I describe my actual motivations in a recent AJOB commentary: Lykos has never acknowledged how the on-camera physical and sexual abuse from its Phase 2 clinical trial was enabled by the therapy's reliance on Grofian “focused bodywork.” The Phase 2 participant had tried to alert the FDA to this connection for years, and it was only after those initial attempts were unsuccessful that we felt obligated to communicate this to the advisory committee, before this dangerous practice could be scaled.

If MAPS had listened to this participant’s concerns when the abuse took place, they could have made their therapy safer years ago. I am not opposed to the psychedelic industry, but to the normalization of pseudoscientific practices when vulnerable groups are at stake.

I've repeatedly said in the past that meaningful change to the current disastrous reality is via combating big tech narrative & rhetoric and critical public awareness, which enables refusal/resistance

AI can seem magical to those with low AI literacy, a new study finds. That, in turn, might make them more willing to try it.

Psymposia has finally been vindicated! While we've been harassed, MAPS/Lykos supporters have known FOR A YEAR that they were pushing a false narrative that scapegoated us for the FDA's rejection of MDMA. They wanted to hide their terrible science & force politicians to approve it.

NB: Veronika Gold explicitly acknowledged using Grofian focused bodywork to accentuate somatic "symptoms of trauma" in MAPS' clinical trials: "In the MDMA clinical trials, we use more of the same bodywork as Stan taught in holotropic breathwork and the LSD Psychotherapy book." /5

For this special issue, we focused specifically on institutional obligations regarding research integrity. What should funders, universities, journals, publishers, regulators be doing to minimize structural incentives to engage in research misconduct and how should they respond when it does arise?

Available now: JLME Spring 2025 issue, "Institutional Obligations to Promote Research Integrity," featureing the titled symposium guest-edited by @hollylynchez.bsky.social, Emily A. Largent, Matthew S. McCoy and Steven Joffe and diverse independent articles.

Preventing and addressing research misconduct demands more than imploring scientists to do better. It is also essential to address the structural issues that allow misconduct to flourish. With these structural factors in mind, this Special Issue explores the institutional obligations of journals and publishers, research institutions, funders, and the government to promote scientific integrity and advance trust in science. Articles from researchers affected by fraud, science “sleuths,” systematic reviewers, journal editors, academic officials, regulators, and leading experts on research integrity offer a range of ideas for responding to the research misconduct crisis, including increased transparency, stronger journal processes for review and retraction, improved scientific lab culture, and efforts to hold investigators prospectively accountable for scientific integrity, among several others.

The National Cancer Institute (part of NIH) released new guidelines for "controversial, high-profile or sensitive" keywords that require "review prior to publication" if included in a product or materials.

Keywords include abortion, obesity, and peanut allergies.
Materials produced or authored by NCI staff that address topics that may be controversial, high profile, or sensitive must be sent to the NCI Clearance Team for review prior to publication.

Depending on the nature of the information, additional review and clearance by the NCI director, deputy directors, NIH, and HHS may be required. In some cases, the material will not need further review, but the NCI Clearance Team will share it with NCI leadership, NIH, and/or HHS for their awareness.

Examples of controversial or high-profile topics include, but are not limited to:

Cancer Moonshot
NCI budget
COVID-19
Vaccines
H5N1/bird flu
Opioids ,
Marijuana
Dietary guidelines/ultra-processed foods
Obesity
Stem cell or fetal tissue research
Abortion
Autism
Peanut allergies
Fluoride
Measles
Diversity/equity efforts
Gender ideology
Environmental justice
Discussion of federal policies
Topics of federal investigations
Issues concerning pending legislation
Topics that have received recent attention from Congress
Topics that have received widespread or critical media attention

More of a general concern, this is the kind of scicom that facilitates an irresponsible hype around psychedelic and MDMA based therapies, and doesn't help the scientific credibility of the field.
