We identify four syndromes of the combined local impacts of watershed pressures and climate change.

And identified several key management actions and policies that would help safeguard salmon watersheds.

Just wrapped up a great week measuring rays at the Museum der Natur Zoologie @leibnizlib.bsky.social in Hamburg 🇩🇪 for @rachhson.bsky.social’s PhD, over 135 specimens measured! 🦈✨ Next stop: Paris 🇫🇷, as our whirlwind tour through Europe’s ray collections continues

Measuring tapes are draped across the specimen (species: Dasyatis pastinaca) Amanda standing among shelves filled with glass jars containing preserved shark and ray specimens. Several large sawfish rostra hang on the back wall. Rachel examining rows of preserved specimens in glass jars inside a zoological collection room. Large sawfish rostra hang vertically in the background. Nick and Olivia removing Ray specimens preserved in large vats.

Laboratory and field studies are often presented as “either-or approaches” with distinct advantages and challenges. Binning et al. argue for “working across the lab-field continuum” to conduct research that can “better inform #policy and practice” @conphysjournal.bsky.social doi.org/10.1093/conp...

This finding is no coincidence. Scientific guided fisheries in the developed world with financial support for funding and overexploitation in the developing world and the Global South, where financial support for shark science is scarce and many coastal communities depend on artisanal fisheries 🦈🌊

Read my review of John Long’s book The Secret History of Sharks in @currentbiology.bsky.social

A fascinating read about the deep history of sharks, the scientists who study them, and the adventures they have in the quest to learn more.

We developed a national RLI and found ecology is important. Countries with healthier Shark & Ray populations (larger RLI), have:
👉 greater shelf area (more habitat)
👉 cooler sea surface temperature
👉 greater primary production
This is consistent with greater extinction risk in the tropics
