Specialist on Normandy 1944, esp. the Cotentin Peninsula. Author of 'Defending Normandy' (2024): https://www.panzerwrecks.com/product/defending-normandy-vol-1/ Love history books but prefer to study the records myself. Try it.

To say hi to my new followers, some information about my #defendingnormandy book series. The series breaks away from the traditional way of writing about German forces in Normandy. It does not rely on old publications but is a fresh examination of original records.

In this online workshop, Sütterlin specialist Carolin Sommer shines a light on the mysterious Sutterlin writing script. We uncover why it was introduced, why it was abandoned, and why it appears so hieroglyphic even when written in a neat hand.

Decoding Sütterlin: Reading Handwritten Holocaust Documents Workshop
Handwritten documents from the Holocaust, whether in the form of diaries, personal letters or official forms, sometimes seem to have been written in an unreadable scrawl. Often, the reason they…

Thanks for the suggestion Andrew. 👍 I'll keep that in mind if my other options are unsuccessful.
Any 47 Commando specialists here? Or people with records from their period in Normandy?
Currently looking into their actions at Port-en-Bessin, and could use some original records. www.47commando.org.uk is great, but I'd like to go back to the original records and build my understanding from there

Random request:

Does anyone have a flak map or unit dispositions for Walcheren in late 1944? Trying to figure out how Marineflak Unit 810 were situated.

Always interesting when work presents you with a WW2 story you've never heard before. Now busy finding out more, but first visited these gentlemen today 🇨🇦 RIP
Hi Norma, I know it can be awkward to get support from people when it feels like you cannot give something back but you are giving something back even if it isn't to the same person. Doing your research and sharing it is a great way to help people forward and something you can and should be proud of
Thanks Paul. Certainly sounds like a good place to start 👍
Looking for intel from the 50th Infantry Division (and attached formatios) for its first week in Normandy. Trying to figure out which German forces they encountered/identified. And yes, this is related to Defending Normany Vol.2 😉

Any help very much appreciated!
Curious about the German forces holding the Normandy coast from 1940 to #dday? This should answer a lot of questions: m.youtube.com/watch?v=z9xD...

Glad it arrived. If I had known your copy hadn't arrived months ago I would have changed that much sooner. 😉
Enjoy!

Another book talk I did was with @philipwblood.bsky.social for Fallout Substack. We talked a bit more about aspects of my book not covered in other book talks.

A short but interesting show is about the German attack on Sainte-Mère-Église on 7 June 1944. It illustrates how much information you can get from a single photo if you know what you are looking at. And in the process we busted some myths: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezjR...

When it comes to stories with an impact, my research into Dead Man's Corner means a lot to me. We got to put the names back into a well known story. It led to a son knowing more about his father's fate and an a forgotten man's grave being cleaned and visited. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qbwn...

When my second book came out last December I took the opportunity to talk about Normandy in the years before D-Day. It includes info from the books, but also stuff I had to leave out.

As a researcher/author last year's D-Day talk about my first book is the most important to me. It shows how I work and comes with info about the 91st Luftlande Division. Unfortunately it got swamped by the 80th anniversary content and still has only very few views www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBZm...

With the 81st anniversary of D-Day coming up, here's a reminder that talks about my research can be found at @ww2tv.bsky.social brilliant Youtube channel.
My most popular show is my talk about German armour in Normandy: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mofF... It's long but well worth it 😉
