But if you want a more direct comparison while still controlling some variables (ie, same studio and IP), I did notice that hyper light drifter and hyper light breaker kinda had very different reception, despite breaker being a much more ambitious project

but it's not an easily repeated success story, hard for other games to reach that level without the combined forces of every webcomic author and also the powerhouse that is fangamer. But a very good example here is UT's precursors (rpgmaker games, namely those made in RPGmaker2000 or 2003)

though "stylistic suck" can only get you so far, undertale used it to keep the scope manageable, maintaining a short development cycle with a huge emphasis on marketing was really the kicker here
