The US “government” right now, a brief 🧵 1/3:

It’s so much worse than I initially thought. Hume published a six volume History of England.🤣🤣🤣

Absolutely not. All of the No.
From 1754 to 1762 Hume published The History of England, a six-volume work, that extends (according to its subtitle) "From the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688." Inspired by Voltaire's sense of the breadth of history, Hume widened the focus of the field away from merely kings, parliaments, and armies, to literature and science as well. He argued that the quest for liberty was the highest standard for judging the past, and concluded that after considerable fluctuation, England at the time of his writing had achieved "the most entire system of liberty that was ever known amongst mankind". (189] It "must be regarded as an event of cultural importance. In its own day, moreover, it was an innovation, soaring high above its very few predecessors."(1901 Hume's History of England made him famous as a historian before he was ever considered a serious philosopher. In this work, Hume uses history to tell the story of the rise of England and what led to its greatness and the disastrous effects that religious fanaticism had on its progress. For Hume, the history of England's rise may give a template for others who would also like to rise to its current greatness. [151]

🙄

Yeah, I’m not at all interested in dignifying *any* of Hume’s…anything by arguing it.

My point wasn’t that Hume is incorrect, it was that literally nobody here cares what you or he have to say, and for largely the same reasons.

This is revolting.

She actually IS astonishingly wise, and nobody here is interested in recommendations based off your fucking personal epiphanies gleaned from the white supremacy book club book of the week.
As to the charge of racism, based on the footnote Hume appended to his essay "On National Characters" in 1753, 1661 and had amended as an endnote for a posthumous 1777 edition, 67] Hutton and Ashton acknowledge that its content is "especially shocking-and deeply puzzling". 681 Bailey describes it as "highly prejudicial speculation". 691 Fieser suggests that Kendra Asher's discussion 70] "is the only one to date suggesting that the footnote might not represent Hume's true views". [64] Fieser suggests that Asher's interpretation "must be taken seriously",
", but stresses the need to
"address head on" the indications that Hume both 'encouraged' and 'assisted' friends in the investment in a slave plantation. [64]

I don’t follow the debate at all. I recognized its parallels to nuclear from my first encounter, and have disabled or avoided it to the extent possible from the get go.* This interview is worth 20 minutes if you’ve been tuned out of the debate.

*I am not criticizing OP for not seeing it sooner, ftr

I've only followed the debate over the perils of AI in a general way, so this interview last night was tremendously illuminating and truly horrifying—particularly with regard to the extreme concentration of power and economic wealth if the AI lords get their way, and how AI is already going rogue.

I‘m gonna argue that it still has more integrity than its misnamesake.

My Cane Corso (his name is Fermi because he’s an Italian mastiff and I’m a nerd) put himself in a weird timeout last night. Or he might have been giving me the cold shoulder silent treatment because I stayed up past his bedtime (that isn’t his bed-bed, it’s his cubicle in my office).
A blue cane Corso is sitting facing away from the camera on a grey oval dog bed, facing the wall like he’s in a timeout.

I lived in Idaho for about 3 years, working at the national lab.

Even if you’re white there is no blending in there, for more reasons than I could’ve guessed.

I had already preordered my copy (but through bookshop.org, so I might have to preorder another and give that one to a friend), but I just bought 4 for donation to activists. 🫶🏻

I lived in Texas for about 4 years, so there are a few tactics I have found to be effective warcraft against Texans:

-all chili needs to be made with ground beef and 🫘
-all iced tea must be unsweet
-do not stock Blue Bell
-feign ignorance re: breakfast tacos
-hide the hot sauce, ketchup only

You’re a fucking menace, and it’s gross. You are why we are here in this moment, you are the problem. Your kids will perpetuate the problem.

You’re 1000x more dangerous to marginalized communities than those who espouse white supremacist ideologies & use racial slurs.

I wish you were a bot. 🤦🏻‍♀️

We know more about the massive military-style raid on a Chicago housing complex thanks to the reporting of @southsideweekly.bsky.social, @blockclubchi.bsky.social, and neighborhood resident Eboni Watson who chronicled the event. Among the emerging questions: what's real estate's role in this?
section of text from South Side Weekly's coverage, which says: "The building was purchased by Wisconsin-based investor Trinity Flood in January 2020, according to Cook County records. On October 1, the day after the raid, a judge reviewed an emergency motion from Wells Fargo seeking to appoint Matthew Tarshis of Frontline Real Estate Partners as the property’s receiver.

Flood purchased three multifamily properties in South Shore in 2020. The neighborhood, which had the highest number of eviction filings in Chicago from 2015-2019 according to the Law Center for Better Housing, has seen a rise in outside real estate investors since the 2017 announcement of the Obama Presidential Center’s construction in the neighboring Jackson Park.

Wells Fargo Bank foreclosed on the building in mid-2024, bringing a $27 million lawsuit against Flood for missed loan payments. In late 2024, the City began closing its largest migrant shelters and, through state funding assistance distributed via Catholic Charities and moving support from New Life Church, relocated many families to buildings such as this one."

Cool - in order to earn your performative allyship merit badge, please write a 500 word essay analyzing the following social media post, using key concepts from Imani’s article. Identify passages that speak directly to what is problematic about the post, and how those issues could’ve been avoided.
For your anti-ableism merit badge, explain how and why failing to use alt text deprives those with sight related disabilities from participating in public discourse. Cite your sources.
