I'm at craft group at Shelley's Creations in #Oakengates Mall today, where Shelley has been helping me shorten a pair of trousers. Look at this epic Halloween hot chocolate she's made! And these adorable pumpkins! Check Shelley's out if you're crafty. Clubs, classes and supplies.

The weather wasn't quite as delightful this morning as yesterday, but the company and cake were! A second #Macmillan coffee morning, this time at the United Church, was very well attended. I sampled the Eccles cakes, which were delightful! #Oakengates
Photo of the main entrance of the United church, Oakengates, with a sign declaring it was coffee morning, and some Macmillan green and white balloons and bunting adding some extra decoration. A row of plant pots stand on the wall in front of the door.

Another event which might be of interest at Oakengates United Church, next Thursday evening, 2 Oct at 7pm.

The Walker family were involved in founding what would become the Walker Technical College in Hartsbridge Road, #Oakengates, forerunner of TCAT / Telford College.

For those who missed it, the #Oakengates United Church, a short walk from The Wakes, up Limes Walk and next door to Teldoc, will be holding their own coffee morning to raise funds for #Macmillan, this Saturday, 27 September, from 10am-12pm.

Perhaps the author of the paper imposed their own agenda, then!

I'm very grateful Oakengates has had the investment and attention it's had since then! It must have been pretty grim for residents when these articles were written. I'll have to look more into how the town turned its fortunes around since then.

And it didn't improve for a while. In a 1984 paper, Oakengates was singled out as a "pocket of particularly high unemployment" within the West Midlands, at 21%. (Huckle, J. 1984 Explaining Unemployment: an example of political education through geography, Teaching Geography, Vol. 9)

Been doing a little digging into Oakengates history. It's a thriving town now, but in a 1963 paper, Oakengates was described as a "dilapidated centre... struggling to survive". (Ginsbury, L. B. 1963. Within the Bridges—Urban Renewal in Shrewsbury, Official Architecture and Planning, Vol. 26)

Lovely morning in #Oakengates. The Wakes hosted a Macmillan coffee morning with quite the array of delicious cakes. Hope they raised lots of money for a very worthy cause!
