Music theory prof interested in too many things, and too many sports teams. Currently writing about Amy Beach, DAWs, and games about the Second World War (not all at once). Swim dad. Happiest in/on water.

Prediction: there are no plans. After a few dramatic days of demolition the east wing is going to sit there covered in tarps for months or years, probably until the next administration has it repaired
This will absolutely trash the humanities @ Harvard too. It's tragic. Certain hints in the piece (German has been in trouble for a while) but when I was there, you'd meet people getting PhDs in Celtic literature, Slavic languages...they already felt anachronistic in the 2010s, & they won't survive 😔
queing up 30+ program notification emails to go out tomorrow morning and my god, I cannot emphasize how many times Outlook has shat the bed tonight. A program designed to write and send emails, has failed to create new emails at least half a dozen times in one sitting. bring back passenger pigeons.
I get lots of typical professor spam (Hey, publish in our journal, only $3000, we promise peer review under 24 hrs), but I just got an offer to buy MTO for $200,000, and I'm going to take it. Sorry to all of you going to MN, I'll be in Cabo with a margarita bucket before SMT realizes what happened
I mean, I did run into one of our ed tech guys in the locker room at lunch time and he said “my inbox is a mess and there’s nothing I can do about it, so I might as well hide out here and work out”
Souvenir from earlier this year while watching F1.

It might be sacrilegious to say anything but Spa, but I think Austin has a strong argument for being the best track in the world 🏎️

(Not pictured: catching up on a week’s worth of laundry spread all around me #dadlife)
It certainly looks like this new era will challenge a lot of programs. For instance, this law being framed in revenue: I looked, and WMU and Miami (my alma mater) have $39 and $38 million in revenue, respectively…and existing expenses in the very high 30s too. They can’t even do what B1G schools can
Oh exactly. Running the ads multiple times at halftime, just in case Tommy Tuberville had wandered away to refill his slop bucket - he’s bound to catch it at least once
Sponsored by the SEC itself, it shouts out the Power 4’s roster of Olympic and women’s athletes and calls for passing something called the Score Act. Seems to be aimed at the biggest chunk of D1 programs and guarantees certain benefits to athletes, and a minimum of 16 sports to be sponsored (2/2)
Since I’m watching Bama-Tennessee (against my better judgment, since USC/ND is also on…) - there’s a rebuttal to that commercial we were discussing a few weeks ago, @garrt.bsky.social @jacquesdupuis.bsky.social and @keithkothman.bsky.social (1/2)
Realizing this means my own introduction to Caroline Shaw thus involved explaining K-Pop Demon Hunters to her, which was either a professional highlight, or I made her think I’m crazy
On one hand, our local district’s schedule is a total mess: high holy days are important, but random days off for the fair, teacher inservices, and conferences are 🤯 for working families.

On the other hand, my daughters came to work with me today and got to meet Caroline Shaw, which was awesome!

Haha, I never even knew there was a second “u,” and I’ve lived in Frederick for more than five years!
I haven't been careful enough about keeping every bill, and First Energy deletes them after a year, but the net effect is going from bills around $70 in 2021, to $90 in 2023 to $130-140 in 2025. But ChatGPT will do sexytimes soon, which is way better than curing cancer or funding my Roth IRA
People on the town reddit fighting over data centers and power costs again (we live just north of data center central, Loudon Co., Virginia, and it's constantly threatening to expand). The price really is crazy though: it's almost doubled in four years, from 6.3 cents to 10.9 on the most recent bill
I was in high school when this came out and my buddy and I went absolutely nuts in the theater for this moment. Same with the sonic charges in the asteroid belt earlier in the movie: BWAAAAAANG. We lost our shit it was so cool
(Yeah I know this is big "data visualization is my passion" energy here, but the point stands)

We could have ended world hunger, solved domestic homelessness, and probably established universal healthcare for the amount that has been poured into AI companies (The Guardian estimates $717 billion), all so they can soon answer the question, "What are you wearing?"

Yeah I have a PhD, but I also have no idea how much spaghetti to cook for a given number of people.
