What if I only ever post here about Metallica recording a cover of "We Built This City" as a personal favor to me

It's so crunchy I thought it was a bottle cap when I bit into it???

I was so excited to get an Italian sandwich for dinner but someone at the shop read "banana peppers" as "bacon" and [Captain Holt voice] oh no

I think "a kid's absolutely going to fall in that" every time I see one
ohseafarer.bsky.social
lol I was going to say, it absolutely was a hit! I was obsessed as a kid. It looked really good at the time but maybe because I also liked TMNT. I didn't even read comics or know who Pacino or Beatty were
ohseafarer.bsky.social
Omg I've been calling those fauxbliettes. What is the logic!!!!
ohseafarer.bsky.social
(they could also be less lethal to run into at speed, what a two-fer)
ohseafarer.bsky.social
(today I also spent quite a bit of highway time wondering why everybody builds those ugly sound-blocking walls out of metal and plastic instead of like big earthen berms or straw bale/adobe walls that can absorb sound instead of bouncing it)

(transitioning to long-rooted native plants in medians and ditches can solve lots of new thanks to climate change runoff and flooding issuuuuuuuues)
ohseafarer.bsky.social
Just kidding, if I asked her for a grant it would be to plant trees in denuded urban neighborhoods and to replace all interstate grass with regionally specific native meadows/prairies/wetlands/transitional woodlands

I really miss being on the road without LED headlights but the wiggling ones are the absolute worst of the horrible lot
ohseafarer.bsky.social
Siri, how do you ask MacKenzie Scott for a grant
ohseafarer.bsky.social
I think it should be legal for me to commandeer any car with those awful headlights that look like they're wiggling and drive it to an auto parts store to have them replaced.

I've been taking my mower over leaves, shredding and piling them in a garden area. NO MORE! Per this article, I'll be raking whole leaves into that garden instead. (Bummer--the mower is so easy, but we need the insects.) www.nytimes.com/2025/10/08/r...

Extra special thanks to The New Yorker for going with this photo, which is the last puzzle piece I needed to explain why I keep saying that seeing DRAG RACE 17 contestant Jewels Sparkles out of drag always makes me think she should be singing on stage in the late 70s.

Tim Curry was a 20-something stage actor living in London in the seedy, sex-drenched 1970s when he auditioned for a new B-movie musical called “The Rocky Horror Show.” In a new interview, Curry discusses the cult classic, David Bowie, Studio 54, and more. http://nyer.cm/Z9RkgrI

Nothing is more important to establishing true freedom in the United States than reducing Peter Thiel’s influence down to his vote
sharonk.bsky.social
thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

(I definitely didn't expect my months-long reading nothing but regencies binge to give me a new weird insight into the current moment via a guy writing about how persuasion works, but PERSUASION *is* my fave actual Regency romance so)

I was remembering this morning an old coworker telling me in 2008 how desolate her parents were that their retirement funds lost so much value practically overnight and realized I still haven't bothered to do anything to avoid that myself 🙃
ohseafarer.bsky.social
(So, if the equivalent action/value on the far right are intimidating shows of force & some variation of dignity conveyed by saying/doing "what's necessary" esp if it's violent and injures someone else's dignity. The costumes and dance parties puncture one, but outrage doesn't do much to the other.)
ohseafarer.bsky.social
(Once dueling became an object of derision, it was unsustainable as a key component of their social construct of honor bc you can't convey honor with an act that's the butt of jokes AND redefined as a crime. They had to ditch the Code Duello, but they obvs didn't abandon the whole construct.)
ohseafarer.bsky.social
It's not really the author's thesis, but after absorbing it all weekend, I think the combination of meeting the individual with compassion on a one-on-one level, and roasting the ever loving shit out of their "powerful" and "smart" criminal "leaders" is more than valid.
ohseafarer.bsky.social
Most of that audiobook got me thinking about how to meet people whose minds I want to change with compassion, but ALSO that the gentlemanly custom of dueling disappeared in less than a generation bc it was ceaselessly ridiculed in the newspapers and by their children AND they were called murderers.

Protestors believe that action has meaning. Protestors are exercising the rights enshrined in the Constitution. For me, protest is about love of country. I will be there on October 18th, and I hope you will be too.

Selling loose cigarettes, being autistic in public, or simply living at home as a non-white teenage girl, though, that warrants another of those grown white men putting his whole weight on your neck? Like you're an animal? Jesus Christ.
ohseafarer.bsky.social
It's obscene, is what it is. This is a
violence they don't inflict on grown white men who massacre children in schools, strangers out shopping and at the movies, people praying in churches and synagogues and mosques, and their own families.

the excessive response plus the violence against this 15 year old girl is outrageous.
