“It is the result of OIST’s interdisciplinary research environment, where researchers can share insights and tackle open problems from different fields.”

This finding could reshape how we model turbulence in industries from biomedical to chemical engineering.

“This discovery bridges two branches of turbulence and complex fluids research that were previously thought to be separate,” said Prof. Marco Rosti, head of OIST’s Complex Fluids and Flows Unit.

Turbulence, the chaotic motion behind airplane bumpiness, has intrigued scientists for centuries.

A new @physrevlett.bsky.social study by OIST’s Complex Fluids and Flows Unit shows that 2 forms of turbulence, once thought separate, actually coexist in polymer fluids.

Hidden Turbulence Discovered in Polymer Fluids
New research shows that two types of turbulence coexist in everyday fluids like shampoos and ketchup, challenging long-held assumptions.

Arrow worms have looked almost the same since the Cambrian era, but their evolution has baffled scientists since Darwin. New @nature.com study from OIST, @ucl.ac.uk and Mie University finally demystifies the worm, connecting genomics, epigenomics, and cell-types. www.oist.jp/news-center/...
Charting the evolution of life through the ancient chaetognath
In a new Nature study, the genomic, epigenomic, and cell-level characteristics of the mysterious arrow worm have been tied together.

They discovered significant differences between the cyanobacterias’ genomes. Says Prof. Armitage, author on this study, “30 to 50% of genes were lost in the symbiotic cyanobacteria compared to the free-roaming variants.”

The researchers were interested in the microbial communities within Azolla leaf pockets: which bacteria were present in which species of Azolla, what symbiotic relationships were present, and how did symbiotic bacteria differentially evolve compared to their free-roaming cousins?

Understanding plant-microbe symbiosis is essential in tackling global challenges like food security and ecosystem restoration. In ISME Journal, OIST researchers describe the unique symbiosis between T. azollae cyanobacteria and Azolla ferns: www.oist.jp/news-center/...
