Our first Outside Pride hike was this morning. We agreed on a slightly longer route than we had planned so had a nice leisurely 5.5km walk on the Cobequid Trail in around 90 minutes. For me it was just over 8000 steps (I have little legs).

Next hike planned for October 19th.
Fitbit stats over a picture of the stream with a sunburst. 1 hour 22minutes, 479 calories, 103 avg bpm heart rate, 8358 steps.

Garmin watch faces never have the steps and distance fields large enough for my old eyes to focus on at a glance when I am out and about without my glasses on - I should move to progressives at some point instead of complaining - so I designed my own.

I added our @outsidepride.org logo for funsies

Due to the #NovaScotia government banning activities on trails due to the risk of wild fires (including a #hiking ban), we are putting plans on hold.

Go to outsidepride.org to register on our website and we will let you know when we can go ahead again.

Sadly a bit short for a group hike but a lovely trail. #hike #LGBTOutdoors #gayhike
Two middle aged white guys in baseball caps look at the camera while walking dogs (not seen) in the forest on a trail. Black Labrador looking out over the river. Golden retriever/labrador mix called Niamh with halti and leash. Lots of tree roots in the background. On a high elevation above a river. Downed tree in the background. River seen through trees.

Apologies for the jiggly camera work. We were each holding a dog leash and they wanted to be carrying on with the hike or finding other mischief while were stopped.

Trail on the edge of a ravine. Sunshine through the trees. Wooden guard railed fence on the right of picture. Barriers to stop vehicles entering at the trail head. Signpost and trees. Sunshine through the trees creating "dappled shade". Old white guy with beard in passenger seat and a golden and black dog in the back seat of a vehicle. The man is smiling, the black dog has her tongue lolling out of her mouth. Shade in the foreground, sunshine in the distances on a gravel path. Gates and a car can be seen in the distance. Sunny day. Grass on one side and trees a little further back. Trees on the right hand side of the trail.

"Sunday was a beautiful day for the Pride Hike at Hemlock Ravine in Halifax. We had 55 folks on this “Out n’ Aboot” hike. MEC Halifax were awesome leaders and had the best trail treats: delicious affogatos made using camp gear! Thanks everyone for a great day!"

According to the World Health Organization, loneliness is linked to approximately 100 deaths every hour. UK charity, LGBTHero identifies loneliness as more acute in the queer community. We want to help reduce #loneliness in the #LGBTQ community and bring more #QueerJoy from being active and outside!
Why are LGBTQ+ people more likely to be lonely?

LGBTQ+ people are more likely to be lonely than cis-het people. This loneliness can stem from a variety of factors: we’re more likely to be disconnected from our families, or have problems finding other people like us who we can connect with..

LGBTQ+ people are also more likely to face discrimination due to their sexual orientation and/or gender identity, which can lead to feelings of isolation and difficulties getting close to other people.

Older LGBTQ+ people may experience heightened loneliness and feelings of disconnection from a queer community that’s increasingly centered around young folks. That is, older queer folks may no longer want to go to LGBTQ+ clubs, bars, pubs, etc., but find themselves unable to find a replacement community where they can connect with their peers.
