Important update: Echo and I will not be at #BLFC as planned. Alt txt/ img for details.
Hi everyone, life update from Laughing Coyote Homestead.
Not only are we grieving the loss of several members of our chicken flock, including beautiful Brave, a rooster I raised from hatching 5 years ago, but life has thrown us an even harder curve ball.
Last night, moments after we pulled our 8-year anniversary pie out of the oven, Echo and I noticed our cat, Nebby, in distress. Turns out that the coolest, sweetest cat in the world had his very first bout of urinary crystals. The night before we were to leave on a 2 day road trip to BLFC. We must attend conventions to pay our bills-- and they're our only chance to see many of our found family and closest friends-- but now, we have to stay home. We must watch over Nebby, administer meds, and find ways to increase his fluid intake to prevent this from happening in the future. I knew male cats struggled with this problem, but even my best at prevention wasn't enough. It is what it is.
We must allow ourselves to love, even if it hurts sometimes. So. What this means for us is we'll be working harder to make cool art from home, running sales and maybe streams and opening commissions, so we can make it through to January for Further Confusion. (We may not even get selling tables there, either, but will shoot for what we can.) Our life is a financial hopscotch from convention to art fair to convention, and missing a step is going to be quite a leap indeed.

If you appreciate what Echo and I do, whether it be the experimental art, farming, local political activism, or what have you, now would be a fantastic time to help. There’s also lots of inexpensive digital downloads on my PayHip, where you can get crafts to make, sketchbook compilations, and ebooks. Anything helps to recoup the cost of needing to miss a huge chunk of our yearly income. Thank you for your support: the only reason our studio runs at all is because of you. And now it's time to get to work! Stay tuned for announcements for shop sales and commission openings.

I know how frightening that is personally; it happened to my first childhood ragdoll when he hit around 8 years old.

I am SO SORRY. Life served you both one hell of a shit sandwich as of late. :(

The crystals are so much more treatable now than they used to be; get better soon Nebby!

It’s one thing to change course because you want to, but I’m resentful how much job changes, job hunting, going back to school, moving, etc is by force right now.

I know your terror because I literally can’t do retail work. It’s a nightmare to look for & compete for them, but there are jobs that may suit you totally outside retail.

I hate how many artists are staring down the barrel of a career change. In your 20s? Fine. What about us towards our 40s?

I'm tired of being painted with the same bigot brush just because I'm a southerner. We're not a monolith and a ton of us are fighting for our home.

I am quite frankly desperate to make ends meet this month. We are $900 short on rent alone despite everything, and could really use any help we can get. I'm taking autumn YCH commissions and accepting any other help I can get to make sure the check clear in just a few days here.

Wood duck (the females are underrated), bufflehead and green winged teal.

I’m a huge sucker for the species with shocks of iridescence. You can’t go wrong with the high contrast black and white species either like the hooded merganser and goldeneye.

At some point, and I'm not sure when, we seem to have exchanged valuing honor & good grip on reality for valuing attention exclusively. Any attention. Sometimes negative attention even preferred. It wasn't planned, but like an overabundance of sugar we just weren't ready as a species for screens...

I don't know what made this but it looks like the computer is having its RAM scooped out while its awake.

"Grief is love with nowhere to go." is the most poignant sentence I've ever heard to describe how and why it hurts.

Being an adult is weird because you want to ask "why" questions around the death of loved ones like you did when you were a kid, but you know all the answers & it all hurts anyway.

The absolute smoothness of your washes makes me stop and zoom in on the artwork every time. I hope the show has been a big success!

I feel like my heart can't get any bigger if I'm not bringing in someone new, but it's just not right in timing or time or finances. I need to find another way to grow it until it's time for the next service dog prospect. I wanted an in-between pet-only dog but then inflation went nuts.

I think that might've been what last night & today was about; it's starting to really sink in. Oberon's favorite season. Two dog sweaters for October. & Christmas. & only one dog. I'm sorry you've got the same hurt in your heart. I cry over Lily too & she died in 2020. Grief is weird & nonlinear.

I started this project a zillion years ago when I wanted to do a cave art pin set. Since my country is a dumpster fire that's not happening, but I DID finally finish the Megaloceros. #bskynightmarket #paleontology #anthropology #archaeology

A picture advertising the artist's cave art stickers for sale. There is a wild horse inspired by Lascaux cave, a Megaloceros (or Irish elk) inspired by Chauvet cave, and a bison inspired by Altamira cave.

The artist's Redbubble (Where they sell shirts and merch) is written on the page: PaleoPanthera.redbubble.com

I will never get tired of Dogs that Shrink When Wet.

They are INSANELY cute and I love the art trope of remixing this specific critter into different fantasy critters and character designs.

Oh my god I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't this LMAO. I am VERY GAME to try this hahaha.

I think you are completely reasonably excited! People have no idea the cool stuff out west and in the southwest; I've seen people think ringtails must be someone's escaped exotic pets before lol. -I'd- be excited to see one.

This gif made me smile because this is not terribly unlike me and my partner lmao.

I hope I can go west someday and see one in person; I'll forever be a sucker for blue birds (my favorite color).

Well done Saladin! Glad he's on the mend and preparing for battle!

That's not just you; I am too! I'm not wholly certain how people find other artists like this short of going to a lot of galleries. I like seeing wildlife subjects that aren't laser focused on hair-for-hair realism; the energy, light, and color here are bonkers well done.

Goats are as many awesome creatures are: prettier than they get credit for and equally as goofy when they feel like it. I'm not sure I've ever seen a blue goat before; that one's especially gorgeous!

I'm going to word the letter today and tomorrow; I'm really hoping they're amenable. I'm not wholly certain I have the spoons to chase the problem to its just conclusion if they aren't. Which drives my intense justice need insane, but earning a living is more important on $-per-unit-of-time basis.
