That shit also ruins gameplay with stamina and heavy RNG at every corner because the friction is there not to create game experience and meaningful challenge, its there to slow down your progress to force you to use "stamina" and buy convenience items to smooth that friction

They usually balance it well but you can easily tell when a character banner was up just by seeing the story focus being on them and then them more or less disappearing.

Or having big emotional moments. Coincidentally that character is the next to be pulled! As the game move on from the banner, so does the story, the character mostly fades away, only sporadically appearing, usually in nonsensical events because the new hottest shit is coming.

I play honkai star rail for its story and hot women, both are good, but you can tell even a game selling itself on story is shackled by the need to sell you the next character, the writing constantly bring up new characters as mean of moving forward and focus on them doing cool stuff
