The world is not "Running out of oil."
The world is running out of cheap oil with current production.
Most wells only tap 20-40% of the oil in a given pocket.
It's just once you get past the initial portion, it becomes progressively more expensive to tap the rest.

We were already in a “post truth” era. This is a mixture of kneeling to the altar of infinite growth, mindless consumerism, and (for the more libertarian technocratic types) genuine hope that “just one more program” can solve all of humanity’s issues.

You can regulate businesses, sure. But I have made gallons of wine in a dorm room closet. I have played cards for money in that same college dorm room. You’re not going to be able to get individuals licensed to gamble or drink.

While I don’t necessarily disagree on moral grounds, both alcohol and gambling have such low barriers to entry that they’re nearly impossible to regulate on the local scale.

Many people have a very strong tendency towards addiction, which can ruin lives. Rather than make things like alcohol and gambling a free for all, people should need a license to use either, issued by a medical professional. There's lots of other fun things to do.
