"The Mommy" didn't want children. Didn't want her body to change like that. Didn't want her ability to maintain another life to define her.

Didn't even want to exist as a mother, and killed herself while pregnant; killing the fetus (I'm pro-choice, i'm just using the language of the film)

I head canon that from the "babies" point of view, it's actually all quite bright and sunny. The gross stuff like maggots on cakes and shit covered changing tables, is a visual shorthand for the living that this place is not "of the living" or that something is very very wrong.
