1️⃣ Thread about one of the most improbable and extraordinary railway project which 🇨🇵 ever tried to realise.

Not in Mainland 🇲🇫, not in Corsica, but a across the Med, in the Empire: 🇲🇦🇩🇿, with extensions into 🇳🇪🇸🇳🇹🇩🇧🇫.

The TRANSAHARIAN 🛤️ (project)

Should Paris - Bercy be renamed after

- Alésia (BFC)

OR

- Gergovie (AuRA) ?

. re-join the fast tracks at full line speed.

+ Current pkw stations in Le Creusot + Mâcon to be upgraded accordingly.

But Cluny TGV, sorry I can't see it.🤔☺️

then 1 more parkway station may come, in Malay (for Sens), on Line Sens - Troyes
(And Transilien R may extend there from Monterreau).

With a view to preserving overall capacity, those parkway stations shall have VERY long slow tracks, so that the whole of a 400-m train can
. diverge at 230km/h

Post-EIS of LGV POCL, there will be some capacity for adding 1 more parkway station on LGV PSE.
In Epoisses, near A6 and on former line Avallon - Semur - Les Laumes A.
(With a Poundbury-style new town)

+ Spur Villechetive - Auxerre SG - Pasilly.

If "my" LGV PTDR is ever built,

For freight, TER, IR/IC.
And for some RER Cluny - Mâcon - Bourg en B - Pont d'Ain.

And I shall update my proposal for mainline PSO conceded operator Trace (Transversales Centrales), by adding Cluny to 🚌 lines

. Soulac sur M - Gex
. Ussel - Annecy

So, what may be done?

Short-term, more 🚌 services (regional and mainline).

Longer term, build a new fast conventional line (160-200km/h) Nevers - Mâcon, availing on

- conventional lines (existing or closed) on Nevers - Imphy + Gilly sur L - Charolles

- studied alternative route for LGV POCL.

Cluny - Mâcon, with a short tunnel skipping Col du Bois-clair.

It sadly closed down in 1968.

LGV PSE marginally runs alongside the former RoW, and the station building of La Roche Vineuse is on the South side.

There was also a line Paray le M - Charolles - Cluny.

In that area.

Chords in Monchanin will be useful, but primarily for service purposes.

In any event, those should be located NORTH, not South to the current parkway station.

What matters there IMHO is the TER loop from St-Léger sur D to Écuisses.

And BTW, there used to be a railway line

The most fragile and least-performing section of LGV PSE.

That's why,

- any underpowered HSTs (e.g. TGV A or TMST) should remain banned from LGV PSE

- a steroidised version of Nuovo Pendolino (= Avelia Stream) may raise some doubts there

- any additional connecting line should NOT see light

Nice on paper, hellish practice.

200 km/km EMUs on that 270km/h LGV section will consume quite some capacity (about 1 tph)

+ 2tph not just 1 to enter/ leave Cluny TERGV station, as there is Col du Bois Clair with long 35%o gradients nearby

Le Creusot - Mâconim is a tough section,

They base their would-be leadership on TGV, that's it.

This stance was particularly exacerbated under Gallois and Pépy.
Farandou was more sensible and realistic. But he's been cornered between an icy shareholder state and the men whom Pépy had promoted.

Underinvestment and general lack of care and attention.

Dijon - Chagny had daily 280 trains each way in summer 1981. The busiest interurban railway in 🇫🇷.

In 2025, it's less than 100.
And if you add the ~110 daily TGVs on Pasilly - Mâcon L, the total number is ≤200.
