THIS! Moving the narrative to first person also helped me establish the character voice/my authorial voice as distinct. Before I switched to first person, I always ended up writing in the style of whatever I was reading at the time.

Hungarian #writer László Krasznahorkai has won the 2025 #NobelPrize in #Literature.

I confess, haven't read him but I'd like to. Here are some recs from the Academy. Herscht 07769 has my eye.

EXTRA: Inversely, the antagonist is going to become more like the protagonist. While he brings out the worst in her, she brings out the best in him. The idea is that they'll start as "enemies," become "true friends," and end up as "enemies" that love each other.
philosophika.bsky.social
As the protagonist adapts to the antagonist's world, she's going to become more capable, astute, outspoken, and charming, but also less principled (or idealistic), more ruthless, & more likely to take risks. In short, she's going to become more like the antagonist. #PlotTober

11. What are some possible ways your main character(s) could grow and change over the course of the story? On the other hand, what are some ways their growth could be hindered?

She gets her virtues (compassion and loyalty) from her immediate family, her cunning from scrambling around to make ends meet (poverty), her unworldliness/inexperience/shyness from her lack of travel & opportunities (poverty), and her cleverness from the luck of the draw (born that way). #PlotTober

10. What are some potential backstory or contextual reasons for your main character(s) having this kind of personality or behaving this way? In other words, what could have caused them to be the person they are at the start of your WIP?

Remember: Use the #PlotTober hashtag, engage with others, and have fun!

The protagonist is cunning and clever, which will serve her well around and against the wily antagonist. However, she's also unworldly, untested, and shy, traits she'll need to grow out of fast if she wants to survive the apprenticeship. Her principles and loyalty may also cause trouble. #PlotTober

It's the focus for me, too. I was diagnosed with ADHD (twice!) in the US, but doctors here have told me I'm "too accomplished" (whatever that means; I can't have a degree?) to receive treatment, so I really am white-knuckling it most of the time and praying for dopamine 😅 #WritingLifeMonthly

I have recently read an ARC of this book and enjoyed it immensely! #BookSky #fantasy

If you love expansive fantasy worlds that feel like classic fantasy but are unique and fresh, and loveable characters fighting with loyalty and love against the gathering darkness, you will love this! 💜

In just 1 week my debut novel will be officially out in the world 🫨 It’s so hard to believe I wrote a book that people can actually read.
The paperback for Songs of Broken bells with a backdrop of a brick wall. There are bells on ribbons hanging next to the book.
Glowing text says Releases in 1 week!
To the right of the book there it’s text that says

"This is an easy recommend for folks looking for rich, queer-normative worlds with lots of diversity and world building, cozy-but-not-cozy fantasy, and lighter romance/friendship subplots that aren't the central focus."

Once Gwen was called Wendy. She was promised love. All she lost was her humanity.
Once Hook was called Rosie. She was promised adventure. All it cost was her family.
Together, maybe a cranky immortal & a smug pirate can find a thing they didn’t know was missing.

Image shows the close-up of a young woman laying amongst plants in a jungle. Her mouth and upper chest spattered in blood, though no wounds are visible.
Text is as follows:

A Film by Alex Baker
Gwen Dale as Wendy Darling
Roseline Rivière as Capt. Hook

Enemies to Lovers
Butch/Femme Pairing
Pan-pires & Pirates
Spicy Sapphics

Here's a little cartoon for #WorldOctopusDay 🐙
Ink and watercolor cartoon showing an octopus peeking out of a coconut shell underwater. The octopus says: "I've been working on a novel, but I'm afraid to show anyone. Maybe I'll put one page out there." A fish swims up to look at the page and says, "That stinks!" The octopus disappears inside the shell and says, "Everyone's a critic."

Here's my latest dark and tragic Victorian short story. It's called, A Vampire in Ursuline Convent. It takes place in New Orleans 1875.

Sorry it took so long to write. I hope you like it. 🖤

All that I want is for my books to stand on their own two feet. To have a life of their own in the minds of their readers. To command their own centre of gravity, independent of me, for however long they remain relevant. I want to see my books get up and walk. 🧵(3/3)

I don't want people to look for me in my books; I'm not there. Or, what little is visible of me is so minuscule and warped, you could never use it to reconstruct who I am. And I wouldn't want you to. It would be a waste of time. And besides the point. I don't write to be seen. 🧵(2/3)
philosophika.bsky.social
I don't want to be a ghost. I'm okay with the idea that I'll be forgotten; I don't believe that a book can grant me as a person any kind of immortality. Once completed, imo, a good book is its own entity. It belongs to its readers, to the cultures that receive and interpret it. 🧵(1/3) #PretendPanel

The magical realism, on the other hand, I need for the language - for the way it sort of hyperbakes reality, if that makes sense? How it makes it more real by making it less real; its talent for showing the senselessness of reality by turning the volume up so high, it fries and refracts. 🧵(3/3)
philosophika.bsky.social
I'm going to try (and probably fail 😅) to employ both minimalist and maximalist writing styles, one for the day (where things make sense) and one for the night (where things don't), and then slowly blur the border between them. It's an experiment. We'll see how it goes. 🧵(2/3)

Lots of books inspire my writing! For this rewrite of my WIP, I've been feeding myself a steady diet of magical realism (Garcia Marquez, Juan Rulfo, etc.), as well as a mix of heavily minimalist (Mantel, Rooney, Beckett) and maximalist (Wilde, Joyce, Rushdie) works. 🧵(1/3) #WritingLifeMonthly
