Third(?) draft of my still unnamed 🤦‍♀️ Vampire+Witch talking-out-their-300-year-relationship-stuff story.

Not sure why I'm trying so hard with this one, other than I feel like it needs context. 🤷‍♀️

"Ava, I’d like consent to use your eyes. Show me."

The return sending came immediately. "Of course, ma’am." I reached out to a familiar and willing mind, opened her eyes, and felt my heart leap to my throat.

A stunningly beautiful woman lounged at one end of a park bench. A nearby lamp illuminated pale skin and lustrous brown hair so dark it may as well have been inky black. I felt my knees, miles away, go slightly weak when she turned liquid emerald eyes toward my borrowed gaze.

Shock ruined my concentration as my vision returned to me in an instant. She finally showed. She stopped running. There was so much to be done.

I burned power to climb stairs faster and search more efficiently. Folded paper talismans found their way into my pockets. My leather jacket flew up the stairs and onto my arms. I swapped my filthy gardening trainers for boots with my mind still racing. What had I forgotten? Anything?

All the while I kept the picture of that park bench fresh in my mind. My apprentice was my anchor. The chill of the night air was my fulcrum. I extended power back in her direction and slipped through the darkness as if down a flight of stairs, using the gravity of Ava's willing presence and putting one metaphorical foot forward. The spell catapulted me toward empty ground leagues away.

I blinked and watched a blonde waif with more tattoos than hair jump when I silently appeared on the opposite side of the bench from her.

The seated brunette calmly smoothed her skirt and licked her lips before turning her head in my direction. "About time." Her voice was velvet. Her smile was sharp and highly contagious.

I've talked before about my fear of vulnerability as a writer, and not so long ago the thought of exposing enough of myself to leave an imprint to a reader was terrifying (but also impossible to avoid, I leave bits of myself around my books like laundry I didn't put away.)

#pretendpanel, I wear my heart on my sleeve as I write. I think people are genuinely getting a piece of me when they read my work. I mean, don't take that too literally: I definitely take things to extremes for characters, or I tidy things up so they're neater in the story

Yeah, I’m not going to silence myself when the issue is being silenced—I’m going to take time every freaking day on my vacation to fill in another feedback report pointing out the flaws in the new terms and how it’ll be weaponized especially against queerfolk.

I think in this case, noise is better.
