“…dammit, Ray, answer me! What the hell just happened?” Right, Tom. I probably should have hung up the phone before I did that. Oops. “I’m here, relax.” I groaned, shifting in my seat. I had probably pulled every muscle in my body. “Relax? Relax?” Tom sounded a titch upset. “What did you do? It sounded like your car exploded.” I surveyed the shattered windshield, broken windows and twisted metal that I was going to have to somehow explain to an insurance adjuster and decided that he wasn’t far from the truth. “I may have nudged her car off the road, a little,” I replied. “It isn’t a big deal.” “You crashed into her car?!” “Just a little.” “Are you just a little out of your mind? Don’t answer that. I am sending the medics. And don’t move, you could be injured.” I laughed out loud at that, and immediately regretted it, as it turned into racking coughs and rib pain. “I am definitely injured. But I don’t think it is that serious.”

“What do you mean?” Sam asked after the silence lengthened for a few seconds. “You see, some of those people end up acting erratically, with an even smaller segment of those becoming violent when the new reality sets in. They all know this, you see. They all had to come to terms with the same facts, and they know, deep down, how they could have reacted. How they imagined themselves losing control. The vast majority of people adapt sufficiently, however, which I appreciate immensely.” Edgar looked around at the crowd of worried faces glancing towards Sam as they walked on towards the tall white spire that dominated the local skyline. “They are right to worry, really. A few people, how do I put this delicately, devolved mentally to a seriously violent state. People have been critically wounded or even murdered by these outbursts. Incidents like these have been becoming more and more frequent too, which is why the Registratum is so adamant on locating new arrivals themselves, and why individuals like miss Alice are prohibited from taking them into their homes even if they provide excellent care to the new arrivals,” the robot explained. “So you’re saying that a small amount of people go bloodthirsty-banana-brain when they find out Heaven isn’t real and start cutting people because of it?”

“Lennie?” He lowered the bow. “What are you doin out here? I almost shot you.” She pulled the arrow from the bark and tossed it to him. “Wouldn't be the first time, Micah Ellis.” She scanned him up and down: scratched leather vest, long brown hair coated in grime, lean arms sculpted by the bow and crisscrossed with scars. “What are you doing out here?” “Trackin.” Her stomach panged—a single, hollow punch to the gut. “Tracking what? Rabbit? Them three-eyed possum? Please don't tell me deer. It's been ages since I've had deer, and with that aim, you ain't likely to hit a thing.” He mustered up a scowl and fitted the bow. “Nah. My Pa.” “Well that doesn't sound as tasty.” “Be serious for once.” He sighed and glanced around the clearing. “He set out two days ago, drunk and ramblin’ on about some boon or other.” He nodded at the boy. “What's with the kid?” “Oh, him?” She grinned. “This is Shrimp.” The boy stood a head shorter than Micah, but he seemed to be squaring him up. Arms crossed, feet planted, eyes narrowed. He gave a single sniff in Micah's direction and grimaced. “Alright,” Micah said. “Where'd he come from?” “The porch.” “And before that?” “I don't know.” “Well he didn't come from nowhere.” “Does it matter? He's here. He's my—what d’ya call it—ward, now.” “Uh-huh.” Micah tapped his fingers on the bow, then turned and started walking. “Well, best of luck to y'all.” “Hey, wait! You're looking for your daddy?” She grabbed the kid by the elbow and pulled as he dug his feet futilely into the mud. “Maybe we can help.” Micah didn't slow his pace as he trekked out into the woods. “He might be your ward, Lennie, but I sure as hell ain't no warden.”

(It's an unauthorized journey, in case anyone wondered why they're not traveling like, y'know... gods 😅)

From my upcoming book THE GODS OF ATALANTIS, Part 1 of my #Atlantis trilogy.
A freighter owned by the Trader’s Guild of Tualatan, carrying a shipment of crops, provided them direct transport to Habuuket. Kena not only talked the driver into letting them ride in the back with the cargo, but also managed to negotiate the price down to only two tepetza each. It seemed he’d had some experience haggling for rides before. For the first time since she’d met him, Mireia found herself seriously contemplating just who Kena was—who he had been before he was the Sun Father. She realized with a shock that she knew almost nothing about him, and wondered at herself for not being more curious. The freighter glided over the rocky terrain at a leisurely pace. Mireia and Kena sat opposite each other among the clay barrels, while the dark jagged landscape rolled past around them beneath the starry sky, and the night hummed with the music of crickets and toads. “Where are you from, Kena?” she finally broke the silence. “You’ve never told me.” “Up north.” “Ata, but where, up north?” “Why do you ask?” She hesitated. “I’m just curious. We’ve never spoken about our lives before—before, you know.” Kena turned his gaze out at the black horizon. “Nothing really worth talking about.”

Av’ry resisted the urge to tell her to stuff the mystic bullshit and be clear, as that was unlikely to go over well. Instead, he tried to pry out some information less directly. “And you have had this…honor?” “I have.” “What is it like? When you, commune with them?” “Bliss.” She smiled, far away. “For a time, you are at one with all creation. Everything is perfect. It is what we all aspire to.” “And how does it let you communicate with the dragons, precisely?” Av’ry asked. “It opens your mind to them. Let’s you hear their instructions and advice. The very lucky can even converse directly with them. As if they were here with us still,” Xiala explained. Av’ry nodded solemnly, trying to look awed by this sacred revelation. Internally, he updated his knowledge on the effects of the drug. An entheogen, certainly, as he had expected. But more specifically, it sounded like a powerful euphoric, with hallucinogenic properties. Auditory, maybe visual.

"Get dressed," Raion said primly. "You should've been ready long ago." "I felt like enjoying myself," Grio tucked in the towel and turned around to fetch his clothes. They were hung neatly and took up almost an entire wall. He'd need a fleet of wardrobes to contain them. And this way, he could see and select what to wear today without the hindrance of opening doors. "What are our plans for today?" "We're heading down into the Dip," Anfri finally spoke and there was a dryness to his voice. His gaze kept flitting away then moving back to linger on Grio's torso. The Dip. Grio groaned internally and cast his eyes away from his more extravagant clothes. Today would be a day of casualness and for attire that could be burnt after use. He slipped a thin jerkin over his head and then let the towel fall so he could pull on tight underclothes followed by loose trousers. It was an outfit that hid the tantalising glimpses he'd allowed them to witness.

We have been spending quite a bit of time together, so I invited her to accompany me today,” Vayen purred. “Nice to meet you,” Luna said, giving a slight bow making sure to accentuate her plunging neck line. They had selected her outfit for just such occasions. Cumulus caught a quick glance and looked away. Vayen wished he could bottle Cumulus’ emotional turmoil like a fine wine. “She is beautiful, is she not?” Vayen cooed. “Did you really just come over here to parade your women in front of me? Are you still trying to detract from the rumors you prefer a more…masculine company?” Cumulus huffed. “If you are making a pass at me I am afraid you are not my type. I also never said she was my woman, we don’t like to put labels on things, if you catch me drift,” Vayen said, squeezing her waist.

Raiden stepped towards his disciples, presumably to heal Johnny as he had tried to do with Sonya, but Mïn Ashå’s raised hand blocked his advance. “Baraka. Your next adversary is Johnny Cage.” “Are you insane?” Sonya growled. “Have you looked at him?” “He is not a worthy opponent,” Baraka added. Mïn patiently waited until the protests died out. “As I am certain some of you have noted, the island begins to fade. We do not have much longer here. And while I graciously allowed you to choose your opponents for most of this tournament, I am within my rights as host to select fighters at any given time. And I am choosing now.” He cast that last word at Baraka, who returned the kind of glare that could make a heart drop dead. And speaking of his heart… It accelerated, embracing the truth that the tarkatan war chief denied: there was no escaping combat, whether his opponent was worthy of his blades or not. “Lord Mïn Ashå, allow me to heal—” “Request denied, Lord Raiden.” “What is this shit?” Sonya shouted what Askaly was too stunned to voice. “You’re so fucking clearly favouring your realm, you know he can’t win this fight!” “Then perhaps he should have been better trained.” Sonya was at the brink of explosion when Johnny placed a placating hand on her shoulder. A hand she didn’t immediately shake off. “We all have a role to fill. Don’t worry, I’m just a supporting character in this story.”

Its familiarity is savage, but there’s a criminal comfort in the understanding it grants me. “But now,” I say, and I can’t help glancing at his lips before I look back into his eyes, “[REDACTED] is here. And we’re closer than ever to [REDACTED]. And the promise you made to her is wrapped up with the promise you made to save him. And you won’t break them. Because you’re you.” Misery surges across his face. “I have to try.” No. But I nod. The single step I take away from him then is harder than every step I ever took to get closer. Choose me, my heart screams. But I say, “You have to.” Maybe I should be angry, maybe I should quake with resentment, but I don’t. I see it now—why it always felt like he was fighting the current of the tide that drew us together. And I understand what it means to him to honor his promise. I don’t tell him, but part of it has already become mine as well. I will defeat [REDACTED]. I’ll do everything in my power to make this world closer to what it can be. I’ll do it because I can’t not. I’ll do it because, maybe, I can. Our gazes refuse to diverge, and I wonder if this is the interlude or the closing, a change in key or the discordance of a mistake. Seeing Mary Anne standing so close to Luke, with his long dark hair and chiseled features, Isabelle couldn't help but see them as two sides of the same beautiful coin, like statues carved solely for the pleasure of displaying peak Werewolf physiology. “I heard you joined the Order of the Lunar Mother,” Luke said stiffly to Mary Anne. “But this isn’t … I’m sorry, that doesn’t give you clearance …” Mary Anne laughed. “The Lunar Mother accepted sponsorship of the Eternal One and helped coordinate the building of this Temple to welcome the new order. There are more than a few of us who understand that faith is not limited. The Eternal One, journeying as they are through the stars back to us, could be an envoy for the Lunar Mother herself. I pride myself as one of a few specially selected priests to lead worship for both our Goddess Luna, as well as the Eternal One.”

“Come, sa’aba, what’s the harm?” Minacaal said. “This man Qiadaan, he is a teacher who gives lectures all around Atalantis. He’s gathered something of a following in recent years, and his ideas are fascinating. Have you heard of him?” Mireia shook her head. Kena stared silently down at his plate. “He makes a compelling argument that the gods don’t exist at all,” Minacaal went on, “and all of the Sun Fathers and Sea Mothers in history were just ordinary humans selected to play the part based on common personality traits. He says the only reason we still cling to the story of the gods is because it gives structure to our society. Of course, I don’t agree with him. But it does make you wonder, doesn’t it?” “I wish you hadn’t brought it up, ba’at,” Aiamin scolded him. “We’re dining with the gods, and you want to talk about a man who believes they don’t exist?” “I’m curious to know what they think,” Minacaal argued. “Who better to ask than the gods themselves? They ought to know if they’re real or not, shouldn’t they?” Mireia wasn’t sure what she thought. But Kena spoke, his quiet voice unexpectedly biting. “I think Qiadaan is a charlatan,” he declared. “He likes to say shocking things for the sake of angering people, nothing more. I don’t think even he really believes what he says.” Mireia was surprised at the vehemence of his answer. She hadn’t taken him for someone who would care passionately about defending the gods. “I agree completely, Sun Father,” said Aiamin. “I’ve been trying to tell my ba’at the same thing for ages, but he never listens to me.”

“And did it work?” Av’ry asked gently. “What?” “Did you find redemption? Peace?” “Nope.” Mikiva laughed bitterly. “I still hate myself as much today as I did the first day I really saw who I was. I am just more accustomed to dealing with it now. “The worst part is, sometimes I don’t think I’ve changed at all. I am still a killer, even though I try not to be. And honestly? Something in me still enjoys it.” Anger and pain clouded her features; it was a moment before she spoke again. “When I put that knife in M’arec today, I felt the same rush I did back then, that same thrill, like nothing had changed. “It makes me think, maybe I was an assassin for too long, maybe it is too much a part of who I am, a part of my nature. Maybe people just can’t ever really change, and I am only fooling myself by trying.”

Patrols are such incredibly dull duties to attend to, and I think witnessing what Nyxel here has to say to the Conclave is a once in a lifetime event. I do not think I’ll be missing that opportunity. Please, don’t let me detain you further, I’m sure your ship needs all the attention it can get.” The group, consisting of the captain, Milly still supporting the captain, Sam and Nyxel, made it halfway across the deck of the Victorious before Sam spoke. “What just happened back there?” “I think your luck is rubbing off, Sam. We got exactly what Nyxel needed to complete her task,” Captain Sinmara said as they approached the port railing of the Victorious, and finally saw what the admiral had been talking about. The Silverbrow sat anchored between the Victorious and the Valkyrie, sandwiched between the two conclave ships, and they were doing all the flying and sailing work for him. The three flew at full speed towards the far end of the cavern, towards a large, open tunnel entrance dotted with lights and structures. Sam looked back and saw that two of the Conclave ships stayed back with the captured pirate vessels, while the other four took up formation around the ship sandwich.

Vengeance kindled the hollow oak of my heart, and I let it spread and consume me. Now, the object of my wrath is dead. Killed by the one I swore to love and protect and fight beside until we together laid down our swords. Redemption may be beyond me, but if I can save her soul, I shall rest in peace.” He looked at Ashrah over his shoulder. “And call me Scorpion. Hanzo… I am no longer worthy of that name.” With that, he vanished into the flames that had enslaved him and which, like Ashrah, he would now wield against his oppressors.
