Noah is having a real bad day 😢

From #Tenement, my dystopian mystery about people living in an infinite building.

It must have been half an hour that I struggled with that door. Finally I was reduced to feebly clawing at the wood, my eyes brimming with tears that mingled with the sweat on my cheeks. Jon’s flashlight lay by my feet, casting its light down the hallway, squandering its batteries.
“Please,” I begged, pressing my wet face against the door. “Please, let me out! Why are you doing this to me? Look—I’m sorry, alright? I’m sorry I opened that stupid window. I just want to go home! Please just let me—!”
The door abruptly swung open—outward, not inward—and I went tumbling forward...
Into another dark hallway.
Groping for Jon’s flashlight, I sat up on my knees and swept the light around me. It looked like Dead Sevens, but Jon and Kazuo were nowhere to be seen, and all the lights were out.
Had I caused another blackout? Or...?
“Kazuo?” I pulled myself to my feet. “Jon?”
Their names rippled hollowly down the corridor, duplicating themselves into oblivion.
I started off down the right hand way, which—if this was Dead Sevens—should have led me back toward Marlon Hall. I shone Jon’s flashlight straight ahead, expecting the light to hit the far wall of the hallway.
But it didn’t hit a wall. It didn’t hit anything. It just kept going straight.
There was no Marlon Hall.
My neighborhood was gone.

G'morning #WIPSnips! Just wrote this into TLC like 10 minutes ago. Was going to add it last night, but got into a productive discussion with a discord buddy of mine on some very pertinent details for this WIP, so decided to slap this on right now.

“Hello? Joeseph Staphson’s phone?” he answers, and my heart leaps for joy for a familiar, friendly face.
“Joey! Man am I glad to hear you!”
“Jennifer? What the hell? Where are you? Are you okay?” The questions come quick, one after another.
“Yeah, I’m fine, I’m alright. Look, Joey, can I ask you something?”
“Ask me something? What do you mean? You’ve been gone for two days now! They found your truck out in the middle of nowhere with a completely dead battery! Your phone too! We thought you were kidnapped or dead, and you want to ask me something??” I can sense the relief and frustration mix in his voice and know that I’m probably not making much sense.
“Yeah, I know how it sounds. I’m fine, really! Look, can you meet me? At the ratty motel, you know the one? Room four. I have something I need to talk to you about, it’s really urgent. Also, don’t tell anyone about this, please!”
The line goes silent for a second. “You’re not in trouble are you? Did your egg-donor show up again?”
“Oh god no! Nothing like that! Not trouble, really. A possible opportunity, actually. Can you just come, please? It’s not a problem right now, is it?”

I crawl into bed. I keep my clothes on. Clothes are my armour. I slip on my headphones and click the play button on my Walkman. I managed to tape Korn's new album onto cassette. I know it is old school, but the battery life on my CD player sucks. I am not made of money for new batteries. I need to save that money for weed.
The sound is aggressive. It drowns out the thought in my head. The fear of knowing where my body is, the knowledge of how many hours I must endure until my part of the world can face our patron star again. I stare at my perfectly white walls as the pills take me.

October 9th – battery

Av’ry visits Fox as she works on a *secret* project.

Approaching the massive door, Av’ry reached into his pocket and pulled out the crystal. The guards nodded politely as he pressed it into the stone and the door swung open.
He pocketed it as he strode inside. He would need to recharge it on this visit, or he wouldn’t be able to get in again. Hopefully, Fox wasn’t too drained for him to take some power today.
It would probably be alright; they had been refining the process for months and he had gotten pretty skilled at taking just enough power from her for a few visits. Not enough to burden her or delay the process.
He lit one of the torches by the door and made his way down the tunnel. He found Fox working; sitting cross-legged on the small cot, sweat dripping from the point of her chin onto the ruby in her lap.
Av’ry set the torch in a bracket, put the food on a small table, and pulled up a chair next to the cot. He could wait until she woke up, but who knew when that would be? The food would definitely be cold by then, and she was looking pale anyway; probably time to make her take a break.

I do not think that moral and fallible aren't inherently at odds with one another. I think a freedom fighter who is an adulterer, a skilled teacher who is a petty thief, or a progressive politician who is battling alcoholism, are all great characters. Moral and yet flawed.

It's a trait that all my protagonists share: their humanity. Even though they're not all human. 😅

Beneath all the bluster and banter, they deeply care for each other, and for their city. They're good people. We need good people.

In BLUDEYE BEACH, Edie is incredibly earnest and always tries her hardest, despite being constantly terrified and in over her head, which I think helps people want to root for her.
Milo comes off cool and detached but is incredibly kind, which is a fun combo for a LI ❤️❤️
