Ikal led the queen through the halls and to the back entrance to the viewing room. She rolled her eyes while she waited to be announced and made her way to her mother’s throne. She never dared to sit in her late father’s space and sitting where her mother once sat often made her uncomfortable. She gave the room a quick once over and instantly knew which man was the ambassador. He was dressed quite formally. A long red and gold brocade jacket that contrasted his dark blue hair that was neatly combed down. She’d never had believed it was the same person if it weren’t for the deep red marks on his face.

Lightning flares, arcing between clouds and reflecting off Dr. Frederick Radcliffe’s golden scales. Next to Dr. Radcliffe’s dragon form, Mauve appears like a dragonet despite being fully grown. Where the copper dragon is long and lithe, he is longer and massive. His wingspan matches, maybe even surpasses, a jumbo jet’s. Being only half a skaag, I’m scrawny compared to Radcliffe and smaller than Mauve. But as the sparring sessions with the smaller dragon have proven not so diminutive, I can’t put up a good fight.

The International Marketplace wasn’t really a place locals would go, but Luke wanted to give his cousin the full experience. Furthermore, Luke thought, he wasn’t really a local. Under big white letters saying INTERNATIONAL MARKETPLACE and a smaller painted sign that said ALOHA, they looked at a water tank that held oysters in each of which the vendor promised you would find a real pearl. Then they found a stand that sold gold chains, nylon leis, and puka-shell necklaces. She picked one out for her boyfriend. Turquoise beads were threaded among the puka shells every two inches or so. At an ABC Store, she bought kamaboko rubber slippers and a HAWAII 77 t-shirt. “Why 77?” Terri asked. “It’s 1980.” Luke shrugged, “Guess it’s still 1977 here.”

Things have to get really loud before your ears start hurting. You can actually get hearing damage and it not be loud enough to hurt. My ears start hurting at much lower volumes. There are so many sounds I hate, and they are everywhere: vacuum cleaners, fans, air conditioners, scissors, lawn mowers, nail clippers, chairs squealing, school bells, really just about anything where metal scrapes against metal. I'm really surprised car engines don't bother me, but autism doesn't always make sense, even when you're autistic. It's hard to explain how those sounds make me feel. They hurt, but it's more than that. It's something like feeling sick or disgusted, or in danger sometimes. All I can tell you is that if those sounds made everyone feel the way they make me, no parent would put up with their kids going to schools that have those noises.

The tunnel gets thin enough that I need to crawl, and then bends. Around the corner, I notice light. Another entrance then. Not just that though. It looks to be sparkling. Curious, I keep crawling, stopping as it opens up into a large room, decorated with gold, with a sleeping blue dragon in the middle. The gold is not just in a giant pile as I was half expecting, but decorating the walls, the ceiling, the stalactites, and just about every other visible surface. It’s arranged into interesting patterns, carefully placed in order to shine in just the right way. Quite impressive with just a single medium. I notice a golden skull of some sort of animal, perhaps a deer. Sabrina wasn’t lying about dragons turning their prey’s bones to gold, then. Not far from me, there’s a skeleton, this one human, half turned into gold. And next to it, there’s what looks to be some sort of crossbow, not yet golden. Aimetor laughed at the idea of using a sword against a dragon, but is a crossbow any better? This person seemed to think so. This person also died. Regardless, it’s better than nothing. But is it worth the risk of waking the dragon? I quietly drop down into the cave and approach the skeleton. I grab the crossbow, then head back to the tunnel. I make it back. The blue dragon is still sleeping. Good. I did not need to be up against two dragons. I notice a red figure outside the cave’s main entrance. At least the dragon’s not attacking Aimetor. Going against two dragons would be bad, but if I could somehow pit them against each other… I slip back out of my tunnel and aim the crossbow at the red dragon. I look down at the weapon in my hands. What was I planning on doing with this anyway, without ammunition?

He is dark eyed, dark haired, with what Anthony calls a ‘ten o’clock’ shadow - not quite a short beard. His skin his golden. His shoulders are lovely. She hands Marco eighty crowns. “Three.” He crosses off three of the little hatch marks. “Where’s the party?” Dominik asks. Anthony pulls out the scribbled note with directions. “It will take us a while to get there.” Elsa and her boyfriend come through the door, and Mika walks forward to meet them. “What time do you call this? We almost left without you guys.” Elsa shakes her head. “I know. And I can’t go.
