I've done both.

Sam & Gabe have always had their names. Elias was originally Az. A carryover from a previous direction I was taking the story.

I used place holders on another project. Jeeves, Darwin, Mike, and Drian turned into Hunter, Liam, Erik, and Yelena, respectively

I hope all writers enjoy their characters as much as I do. Authors spend so much time with their characters. They haunt our dreams, travel through our bodies to our fingers, and talk to us in the waking hours.

As the bag hit the table with a jingle, a single coin popped free and rolled away. Fox reached out and retrieved the coin, toying with it idly, letting it roll across her fingers. “So, do you have something for me?” she asked. The young man watched the tumbling coin, mesmerized by the candlelight flickering off the gold piece. “What were you asking about again?” he murmured, clearly distracted. “Trissilver Yssala. The Deep Valley Temple. Does that name mean something to you?” “Well, like my friend told you, I am on my way there, ma’am.” “I am hoping, for the sake of your purse, that you have more to give me.” “Of course, of course,” the page replied hastily. “That is where they are holding the event. The master and the mistress were invited, but the mistress has taken ill. So, they sent me to return the invitations, with their apologies.” “Now, here is where I get confused, P’ero. You arrived in town 2 days ago. So, why haven’t you shifted to Cillvala yet?” The youth blushed, hesitating. Fox tossed him the coin. “This stays between us. No one else ever needs to know.”

"GOLD They say there's gold in the old dwarf tunnels. That's... True, to an extent. There's gold to be found, for anyone willing to look hard enough. And the dwarfs don't hide it, not within their own tunnels. Statues, goblets, plates, all manner of objects are formed in gold! But you'd be a fool to think that gold is valuable. If you take it, you can't sell it; any dwarf knows dwarf gold at a glance, and without the provenance to back it up, it's the quickest way to find yourself on the wrong end of a pickaxe! No, better to stick to wood. The dwarfs value it far more, but couldn't tell an oak desk from a trestle table."

These were the thoughts roiling through all four brains of Zepple, a Vielkopf that was considered a genius even amongst his own intelligent kind. Logical, practical, and assured, he'd seen many the universe had to offer, and seemingly had an answer for everything. However, every synapse in his brains nearly short-circuited as he saw the familiar ship of the lone human in his employ begin the docking process, several megatons overweight. And the reason why was towed behind them via a very struggling tractor beam that looked ready to fizzle at any moment. Four sets of eyes blinked as his throats ran dry. His intercom buzzed. "Uh...Zepple?" "Speak." replied the Vielkopf in a cracked whisper. "Human Amos is back." "Yes." "They, um...there's...there's...a space whale in their tractor beam."

“I’ll give you three cogs for each of the waters and two cogs for the wind.” Jun leaned against the counter, his palms on either side of the wooden crate. Hair, dark and straight as an iron shaft, fell into his eyes as he inspected the rows of clay jars nestled inside. “What about the dirt demons?” Millie crossed her arms and gave him a shrewd stare from beneath the broad brim of her straw hat. Her haggling face. She still remembered when Jun had been a grease boy, lower than the slag caked on a smelter’s boots. A crisp white shirt and a foreman’s apron wouldn’t intimidate her into taking less than her wares were worth. “Best I can do is a lug a piece.” Jun shrugged like it was out of his hands. “Last time you paid three.” “Yeah.” Jun scoffed, tossing his hair out of his eyes with a shake of his head. “And after you left, the floor manager threatened to dock my pay if I wasted good money on sludgers again.” Millie could tell Jun was dead set on the price by the tense line of his shoulders and the stubborn jut of his chin. She’d have to try a softer approach. “Come on, Jun-Po.” Leaning forward, Millie pushed the brim of her hat up so Jun could see her wide, pleading eyes. “I can’t ride out Stormtide on this.” She didn’t even have to fake the quiver of worry in her voice. Jun’s shoulders slumped on a heavy sigh. He wouldn’t go up to three lugs, not after getting dressed down by the floor manager, but maybe she could pry two out of him by stirring up the ghosts of better days.

Sam uses a pistol and a pistol-caliber carbine of the same caliber. Finding ammo is hard, and it's easier using the same.

Her melee weapon is a homemade cudgel. A two-inch ball bearing attached to a short stock of rebar. The Breaker Ball.

Sam is good at recognizing that those who have captured her are stronger, and that brute strength won't get her freedom. She can usually check her tone and how people perceive her, but she underestimates people's opinions. She believes she's not as important as she is
