Lightning flares, arcing between clouds and reflecting off Dr. Frederick Radcliffe’s golden scales. Next to Dr. Radcliffe’s dragon form, Mauve appears like a dragonet despite being fully grown. Where the copper dragon is long and lithe, he is longer and massive. His wingspan matches, maybe even surpasses, a jumbo jet’s. Being only half a skaag, I’m scrawny compared to Radcliffe and smaller than Mauve. But as the sparring sessions with the smaller dragon have proven not so diminutive, I can’t put up a good fight.

Chapter 4 Glimmers The sun poked through the clouds often enough to shimmer off the drying puddles on the pavement and make the sodden grass sparkle all across the quad. One wilted flower had shriveled and browned beside its still brilliant gold and burgundy companions. It was over this single spent bloom that Helena crouched, holding the old-fashioned camera as close to it as she could and adjusting the manual focus. Here was evidence, on this otherwise perfectly tidy campus, that death could find you anywhere. She wanted to capture it before some well-meaning gardener snatched it away to hide the imperfections of the world from the students of the idyllic New England college. No impulse could be more boring, as far as she was concerned. Helena was desperately uninspired by the straight lines of the perfect houses nearby and the spotless curbs and sidewalks. Where were the messy yards and decaying garages? It almost made her miss home, the rusted fences and overgrown lots. Where were the wild, uninvited things? The weeds that sprouted up through the cracks in spite of everyone’s efforts to suppress them? “What are you up to?”

I grind my teeth. I’m such an idiot. A phase disruptor is a magically powered laser cannon with the unfortunate effect of immobilizing dragons while they ride the slipstream. The gunman doesn’t need to see Radcliffe’s draconic form to use the weapon. All the gunman has to do is point and shoot at the dragon’s humanoid golem. Think. God. The smell is so awful I can barely manage a single coherent thought.

Bullets plop into the blob with seemingly no effect. A stringy pink tentacle shoots from the mammoth pustule, wrapping around the head of a hapless magician. The man is lifted from the ground and pitched off the hillside. The other magicians fall back to avoid other questing tentacles that shoot from the blob. “That’s not…” Joe gapes at the bizarro battle. “I think it is,” I say. “We’ve found the skaag.”

The guards start shooting again. Gore returns fire, but his aim is terrible, going well high and wide of any targets. The whine of the engines comes from directly overhead. The knifelike shuttle hovers about twenty feet off the ground in the tangerine mist. Kyt stands in a hatchway, holding a massive gatling gun in all four of her hands. A grunting sound comes from the gun and blue tracers erupt from the barrels. The insectoids dive for cover or are splattered into goop. Shuttles are perforated, and something explodes, sending up a fireball. Kyt stops firing and tosses down a ladder that dangles a few feet from us. “Climb!” the rax shouts. I stand and snatch the ladder. “Can you climb?”

There was no need for neighbor to betray neighbor, or son to turn on father. Such quaint informants weren’t required, not when your own home—what else were HomeAIs for— watched, listened, and scented at all hours of the day and night, silently reporting anything at the fringes of the bell curve of normalcy and beyond for further analysis. While citizens were out and about cameras watched and microphones listened for anything transgressive committed or uttered. Why the malcontents could even self-report in their dreams, their subconscious revealing antisocial, or more importantly in the eyes of the authorities, anti-government proclivities.
