At a safe distance, I levitate and watch the dragon crash into the sea. Blinking against burning rain and pummeled by the howling wind, I scan the ocean for the dragon to no avail. Mauve wins this round simply by escaping me.
From somewhere to the east comes a trumpeting bellow. Through the sleeting rain are a flash of gold and outstretched green wings. Dr. Radcliffe comes to summon us back to the airship.
Mauve rockets from the sea, salt water cascading from her scales and wings. She shoots past me, close enough to vibrate my bones. A growl rumbling through my chest, I follow, heading toward the titanic Knights of Magic airship, Wind Reaver, reminiscent of an aircraft carrier hovering in the distance.

“I need to know who hired you.”
“Times up.” A meaty hand grabs my shoulder.
“Let go of me, or you’ll be missing a hand,” I say.
“I suggest you do as she says,” Radcliffe says, voice dripping with condescension.
Another vibration runs through the airship. I hope the extreme weather doesn’t become so violent it upsets Pallas.
The hand drops from my shoulder. “I don’t want any trouble. But the rules are the rules. Five minutes. That’s it. The time is up, and my feet hurt.”
“Who hired you, Gore? Tell me.”
“Get me out of this cell and safe from Bergman, and I’ll sing like a songbird,” Gore says.

In the sanctum below the school, the ancient enmity shuddered like a monstrous creature waking from a long and restless hibernation. The icon containing the rancorous presence shook upon the plinth. The rats made fat and potent by the radiation from the idol paused in their activity, listening, sniffing the air, and on the lookout for the deadly green light. Even the nightcrawlers burrowed deeper or tucked in further into hideaways, driven by something more primordial than the instinct to survive.

The dragon head and the rest of the draconic body parts flash out of existence. When the various body parts reappear, Mauve no longer watches me from the ceiling. I glance over my shoulder to make sure the dragon isn’t surreptitiously spying on me from behind. No sign of the dragon’s head, and Mauve has pulled out her phone, studying something on the screen. Titus has made himself at home on my bunk, cleaning his front paws while eyeballing me.

The interior of Brightstar is as unsettling as the exterior. Every surface is crystal clear and glowing with the orange light of the Motherstar. With every footstep, I fear I will fall down and down and down hundreds of meters or more to the dark forest floor. At every turn, I’m unsure if I will walk down another hallway or into a wall. Gore and Jett, who was ordered to retract his wings by the guards, move tentatively and snarl occasional curses. Even Radcliffe seems hesitant every now and then. The insectoids move confidently and swiftly as though entirely unperturbed by their surroundings.
