Thread of self-publishing advice-seeking from the #WritingCommunity!

As I prepare to release my debut novel this year, I am very naive about the process!

I’m looking for overall advice, cautions, and logistical suggestions.

How did you do it? What did and didn’t work well? What are my options?

A few days ago, I stood in the graveyard of an 1100 year old church, getting damper and damper in the drizzling rain.

A woman walked into the graveyard, waved, said hello, and, as we had previously arranged, handed me a paper bag full of human bones.

The life of a churchwarden is a strange one...

Im probably not doing this right cuz everyone else has gorgeous artwork and I just have...
Wire-rims?

But these are my real peepers.
Watching you.
Watching you watching me.
It's not awkward.
It's ok.
It's ok to look.

Telling the reader what the pov character looks like.
I struggle with that cuz why would the pov character have such a clear awareness of their appearance at that particular moment so early in the story. They have other things to worry about (like, an inciting incident?)

I dont want to wake up to find the world celebrating that "it" happened.

No.

"It" isn't enough. "It" isn't real consequences. "It" won't do anything to stop the crazy train we are strapped to.

"It" will be a nightmare.
"It" is not the easy answer everyone longs for.

The answer is NOT that easy.

#Critterary

I have unicorns AND kelpie!

The kelpie turns up as basically a mode of transportation in Hell. Stubborn bugger 🤣

But I have a pair of twin unicorns that guard the side door of the chapel.
Remalendius and Ozzy.
We learn no unicorn lore, but these two are bit cheeky and odd.
Day 23
I kinda forgot that the word 'equine' existed when I made these, but 'horsie' is so adorable so it stays! Let's enjoy them! Whether they fly, are magical, or trying to kill us 😅🐎🦄

#Pretendpanel

I only really remember this because I fucked up really bad and did it to the original draft instead of creating a fresh draft for the experiment.

I wrote a novel from her POV. Decided I wanted his POV, too, and changed every other scene to him.
No.
Bad.
His POV was not compelling.

Good evening #pretendpanel! Hope your January is going swimmingly. Today, let's discuss...

January 23rd: Was there ever something you changed about your process, or even in a single draft, that you later came to regret?

#AwesomeCharacters

Jack is somewhat haunted by the future. He is anxious and sad, knowing that someday the people he loves will die. Himself, too. He knows life constantly changes. One day he'll have to retire. Being in his early 40s, he is more and more aware that he is slowly aging...

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

What's your character's view on enjoying a moment?

Do they savor it, wishing it could last forever? Enjoy it but still look to the future?

Or are they fixated on the past/future too much to enjoy it at all?

Mystery- Brian has a pet cockatoo named Rameses. I feel like he's Chechov's bird, but he doesnt effect the plot. He's just a character detail. Talia is afraid of birds 😆

Someone mentioned aliens and then I occurred to me that the Jymathian aliens in my abandoned horror/romance/space-opera might be monotremes.monotheistic.
They are largly humanoid, but after doing the alien mambo with a man and getting fertilized, women may lay a clutch of eggs...

Ive done this one for my others, so lets do my newest MCs...

Nora would frame a beautiful lacework peice of art on her mantle, and maybe candles and a tasteful seasonal knick-knack on her mantle. Her phone might be a sunset over the orchards.

Bayle would have photos of his family...

Funnily enough, there are no undead in my Hell world of the fantasy. It's a vibrant living world of fantasy creatures and monsters.
The dead?🤷‍♀️ They just *poof* out of existence and are never seen again.

The closest thing I have are ghosts in the fantasy and the romance.

In Mudlarks?

I was gonna ask a question about the fae today but, How about some undead? Does your story have any? What kinds?
January 22, 2026 at 5:43 PM
We do see one creature in Hell who is clearly disturbed and would be in need of mental-health help if found IRL. She is merely described as having a broken soul, but it's not explained what that means.
Lore is that it's basically PTSD from the war on top of dissociation and delusion.

This test print doesn't use the fancy inks so the backer versions will look better, but it still looks good! The blue in BRIDE and the spine will be the biggest changes.

Will probably make the text a bit smaller on the back, put in a little bio or something

Leviathan's rebellion has been ongoing for several decades now, and it seems he is making some gains in Hell.

This matters only distantly to the guardians at St. Romain’s. Helena does eventually get caught up in the conflict, but it takes a while to get there.
