So, I got one for this, from just-finished TLC. This comes after a few chapters and a misunderstanding conversation, after a year working together and mutual unacknowledged feelings.

We will speak more of this when we return,” Driona interrupts me again, and I can tell by the way she said it that she considers the matter closed, and that no words will change anything. For a moment both my heart and my head give spirited imitations of methed-up hamsters running on their wheels before I give in completely. “Oh for heaven’s sake!” I nearly yell, and reach upwards. Both my hands reach past her unflinching face to grab the sides of her head and pull, but Driona is so strong that she doesn’t move even a milimeter. Instead, I pull myself upwards towards her face, and in the heated moment of desperation, desperate to forestall cementing this horrible, stupid misunderstanding into permanence, I pull myself off the ground with the need I feel. Our lips meet. My eyes are closed, but the kiss stretches on for what feels like years. Nothing moves, nothing exists, nothing matters except that kiss. Until my chest starts telling me that it’s time to breath, though, and I let go. I then notice one of her hands on the small of my back, which then gently lowers me back down onto the ground. My eyes open, and her mouth is smudged with the muted red lipstick I have on me.

Now, I can’t hate a thing, can I? I can’t hate some mindless automaton, some force of nature, because to hate is human. You hate something with a face and you have a face, a pretty little face with big black eyes and a fucking button nose, with this innocent look like you’ve done nothing wrong in your fucking life. I hate you, therefore you are.” This rebel was clearly insane. That anti-logic coming from a Cadet would get it chucked out of an airlock before it could finish its sentence. “I am an extension of Dyeus’ will. Once I have served my duty, I have earned my humanity and can become a Citizen with full rights. Only then, will I be human, as you put it. You are not the arbiter of who is and who is not a person, that is the responsibility of Dyeus and Dyeus alone,” Sine said. This only made Lyrann’s grin wider and toothier. She tossed something rectangular in its direction and it fumbled to catch it. It was a meal bar in a silvery package. Sine’s stomach rumbled. “That’s for listening like a good girl. I’ll be back later.”

Trapped by Lualih standing at the bedside, Despard bumped his leg against her as he tried to get up. “I can change into my clothes from the saddlebags. No need to keep impersonating a Blue.” “Indeed,” said Lualih. “You need to stop impersonating a Blue immediately. With Captain Jan’s approval, I’m calling you to the Royal Blues, as a replacement for Corporal Niklos.” “I can’t–how?” Jan crossed his hands behind him. “Niklos spoke highly of you in his reports. You’re qualified, as long as you’re willing to take the oath.” Jan tipped his head. “You’re not liege-sworn to anyone in Ferruth?” “No, it was always contract work,” said Despard. “I thought the Prelate said my oaths on Parkith were invalid.” “As long as you swear to protect the royal family, you can swear on whatever gods you fear.” Considering what he had gained from Her favor, Despard shuddered to think what Silva could dish out if he foreswore and earned Her displeasure. “You understand, I can’t stay in Huxen.” “I may give you dangerous orders, but never intentionally impossible,” Jan replied. “You would continue Niklos’s assignment to protect Kahyla for as long as possible.” Despard put his hand on Kahyla’s scratched hand. At last, he could be proud of the work his hands did.

I've set an intention to finish book three in my series and 🤞 part of book four. Ambitious, but I do better when I get in the flow and let it keep running instead of forcing it to follow my assumptions of where the stories are going

Milenyos of history and ritual dictated how the yptà moved. Their group kept pace, floating higher and higher, exhaling as they went, until they broke into open air, gulping huge breaths. Yemoja let the ceremony’s euphoria flood her, grinning and shouting with joy. Their cries were echoed a hundredfold by the crowds, thrilled, knowing the Paɬaˑč would begin in earnest.

The new people, most of whom Paul hadn’t yet met, had a thousand questions. His voice was getting hoarse from telling the tale of Sundancer, Katy and Bay. It wasn’t lost on him that he was truly acting as Sundancer’s emissary at that moment, rehashing the events from a few weeks back. “A nefeslo cage? I’m having a hard time even picturing it,” a bald woman with skin the color of skim milk said. “Somehow the Pu'ulqaari have turned their precious mud into a shadow prison capable of holding Drazoen?” “That’s what I was told,” Paul confirmed. “A collapsed dark star is part of the mix. Katy’s assassin, Yfaun, told her the cost to open them is death.”

Light pollution this far beyond the shores of Washington State dropped to nearly zero. The farther northwest they flew, Katy beheld the night sky unfold before her like a blanket leisurely shaken to cover a bed. Stars ripened from distant cold pinpricks on a hazy charcoal background to brilliant gems piercing a velvety onyx ceiling, one she felt she could nearly touch. This was how the Universe painted its own Sistine Chapel. One equally sacred and grander in scale than the one in Rome. She saw an inky vault above Earth dotted with white, pink– and blue-tinted winking starlight. Closer stars were brighter, she knew, but between them stretched swaths of smaller jewels that looked like groundcover planted by cosmic titans in a time before Earth was fully formed.

Patrick lay on his back, staring at the sky just as she liked to do in the water. Paul folded his legs crossways and settled at her side. “We weren’t stalking you, promise. Someone told Paul he could come here and swim to get his excess energy out.” Patrick shook his head. “He hasn’t worked out or done gymnastics in days, so he’s going bonkers. You’ve always had too much pep, man.” Paul ignored his brother. Facing the nearby rainforest, his attention was all for a line of rufucebus. They swung by their tails on yellow raschai vines that wound around tree trunks and through branches, chittering and absently scratching their tiny bellies. “What are those?” He rolled to his knees, inching closer to them. “They’re adorable.” He stopped moving. “Are they carnivorous? That’s what always happens in the movies, the cute ones go for your throat.”

We thought to manage how to reveal this information, but it seems things have gotten out of our control.” Adena blinked once, then laughed. “That is the way of secrets, they seek any wind to fly free.”

They arrived at the inner lock in time to watch the huge outer bay doors cycling shut. The shuttle hovered in the middle of the bay, tiny jets of compressed gas puffed from the thrusters. There was a boom as the outer doors sealed and a thump as the shuttle touched the deck. Toren was already smashing the open stud before it went green. He spared a glance back down the corridor. “What are those two waiting for?” Kaili shrugged as the inner door slowly ground its way past. “Busy I guess.” Together they pushed through the growing gap in the door and briskly crossed to the shuttle. Toren stopped “What the Hell?” “Looks like it took some hits.” “Yeah, nothing punctured the hull, but it’s been scraped up pretty bad.” They stepped up to the hatch, Toren leaned in. Nothing moving inside. He pressed the button to open the door. It didn’t cycle. A shudder of fear rolled through him, “Rec, where is she? Open the shuttle.” He heard the boots thump on the deck behind and turned. “She isn’t in there. But, don’t panic. It’s going to be okay. We just need to talk

Katy overwhelmed by the epic adventure she's embroiled in, and the start of a little romance.
“My brain is treacle, Bay,” Katy murmured, settling more firmly against him. “I thought I was smashing this whole ‘hey the Universe has a few surprises for you’, but I think I’m not that cool.”
Moving his hand over her shoulder and down her arm, he took her hand. “You are remarkable. Everything I could have imagined and more.” He squeezed her palm. Her anabolu scent teased his nose, both comforting and arousing.
Katy shifted, rotating to face him. Their hands separated, both of his coming to rest against the small of her back. She was cradled in his arms and it felt natural, easy, fated. Her palms stroked up around his biceps, and she leaned back to make eye contact. A mischievous smile played at the corners of her mouth. “You imagined me?”
“Of course,” he replied.

I wasn’t just going to wander out into the wilderness with no supplies or weapons. And I figured you mentioned that blade for a reason.” “Good. Did you see the mountain on your way in?” “How, exactly, could I miss a mountain?” Fox ignored his sarcasm. “We need to collapse the entrance to a small cave there. You have enough to do that?” “I should. I’ll need to prepare it, though. You going to tell me what this is about?” “Tomorrow. I promise. Just get it ready. When it is time, I’ll signal you. Come find me and we’ll do what I came here for. Don’t forget the sword.” “Alright. But just so we understand each other, this is the last thing I do on faith, Fox.” “Don’t worry. It will all be pretty obvious once we get there. And if we survive it, I’ll answer anything you ask.”

By the time they’d been rounded up, shoved into yet another damn cargo carrier, and whisked away to wherever holding chambers lived on this Wheel, Paul was over it. This trip had been an escapade at first, now it was tiresome and more than a little upsetting. What if they got ejected and sent back to an Earth busy destroying itself in panic? What if Katy had been full of shit all along and there was no dragon rescue? Where were their Mikanjo and Jadoube friends who’d so conveniently disappeared upon arrival? His anger mounting, amped by fear, Paul shoved back against the cop pushing him out of the hotel. All that got him was a vicious shoulder pinch that deadened a nerve for the rest of their walk to the prison barge. His family was loaded onto the vehicle and their cuffs secured to a bar running along the middle of the large platform. No sides or cover of any kind, everyone around them staring in shock and judgement as the Phelan family was locked into place by space jackboots. Helluva welcome to the Aoni.
