Safe in his arms, Yuhwa talked and talked. She held nothing back, recounting her arrogance, fear, confusion. Every moment. When she told him of the Côttru, and Ni-Matak’s thoughts on Paul, he laughed. He tightened his embrace reflexively when she spoke of stumbling in total blindness.

Breakthrough today! Been lost in an ending where I felt like I'd painted myself into a corner & was *this close* to scrapping it. A 2 day break and plenty of "what if" plot mapping and I found my way through. Whew!! 😀

“We demand to be heard,” the male of the duo shouted forcefully enough to carry to their ears.
The woman spoke as soon as she was signaled sound had been turned on. Yuhwa remembered her from Ishar. “The Vi’isser clan of Ishar lodges a formal complaint with the Calling.” Her blue facial gradient nearly pulsed with her suppressed fury. “We have been cheated and wronged, our property stolen, and we will be compensated.”
Sundancer didn’t verbally acknowledge the PQs, but her eyes focused solely on them. Absolute silence filled the Calling for long moments. Stunning way to reassert her authority, Yuhwa marveled.

Paul flushed. "It's just," he hesitated. Was he going to share this out loud? Yes, yes yes he was, because he had to hear if his thoughts were crazy or not. "It seemed ridiculous before, back on earth. Then we flew through space and met all these big players in the universe. Hell, we spent time with a dragon! Now I can't help but think that maybe my family is meant to take charge, when it comes to heralds. There are nine of us and our species is so new. Maybe the prophecies, triggers and whatnot, we're all waiting on us getting smart enough to handle aliens and sci-fi tech?"

Introducing a character who will play a part in future stories. She's a sword, a ritual combat warrior and hero of the Wheel on Centris.

“I met her only once, as child living here with my parents.” Yuhwa’s voice filled with fondness. “She should have had no patience for a child like me; one who knew all answers and shared them constantly. But she was kind.”

“She’ll save Budi?” Ma sounded worried and protective. “That boy needs care. Did you see his face tattoo? Makes me really sad for some reason.”

“Isae Zam is Tangun’s second in command. For one so young to do that, she has had to be exceptional,” Swailu assured them.

“Da,” she smiled as she said, “I don’t care about hurling, much less my team from uni. You’re the one who cares.” 
A dramatic sigh. “Sweet girl, where did we go wrong wit ya?” He chuckled. “Your ma, loves sport. Ian and his Deb, Patrick and his Vasuda. Paul. Oran. Everyone else does, but not my Katy. I’ve failed as an Irishman and parent.” 
Since he couldn’t see her, Katy didn’t bother hiding the wince. She knew he didn’t mean anything. But always, always, she was the odd one out. Different from the rest. Forcing a light tone, she replied “I know, Da. I am your ‘sore trial’ in life.” 
“Never you mind that, now, you’re my heart, the light of my life.”

Every Jadoube goes on a quest to find their "role" in life, which is revealed to them by their personal waja (a metal like platinum). Part of that waja is then tattooed to their body.

Yuhwa took a step back, examining him from head to toe. Now she noticed the waja designs trailing down his hands and each finger. They sketched the typical mediward symbols of cauldrons and third eyes. Not that either had ever been part of Jadoube medical working, but the iconography didn’t always make perfect sense. Her mother had been a baker: her waja formed a loaf of bánhti, perfect in every detail, but her tattoos had wrapped around her eyes in replicas of flames. Had they been black rather than waja she’d have been mistaken for a Tschuele.

Paul wouldn’t say this aloud, but he wouldn’t lie to himself, either: he knew there was a good chance he’d be a herald like his sister. It would only make sense, wouldn’t it? Something in these dragons needed what Humans offered. Whether that was their relative youth as a species (fresh blood, as it were), or something specific in the Phelan DNA, he didn’t care. But he was listening to all the hints being dropped, keeping mental notes.

“The people. The colors and languages, the myriad cultures and…just all of it. We have nations and tribes, what we call races. But they’re all the same species. This is like the ultimate Wonderland variety grab-bag, and I haven’t seen enough. It’s too soon to lose it.”

“How was the core?” Yuhwa had snuck up on him and he suppressed a jump.
“Gorgeous. And I learned about those silver tattoos you’re going to get someday.” When Yuhwa blanched and dropped her head, he made a note to push later. There was quite a gulf between Tangun’s assertion the quest was a joyous revelation of their path in life and Yuhwa’s negative reaction right there.

October 12th – hope

Today we are in Anthropomorphic, my urban fantasy.

Ray is trying to arrest a suspect. It could be going better.

I noticed the smell first, a heavy, pungent, petroleum stench; then I saw the bottle at her feet. Lighter fluid. From how intense the smell was, she had dumped the entire bottle into the carpet while I was distracted. This fire bug had come prepared to do more than burn a little skin this time. She had been planning to immolate her next victim. She might still manage it.
I reached for my gun, but the lighter was already falling from her hand. I covered my face with my arm and turned away as flames erupted from the carpet. I looked back up to see her running for the door. The flames weren’t that bad, yet. I could go after her, but if I did, the unconscious bus boy would likely burn. Shit.
I grabbed the boy under the armpits and dragged him towards the kitchen. The room froze as I pushed through the door. I passed the unconscious employee to the man nearest me. “There is a fire in the hall. Take him outside and call 9-1-1. I’m going to go and get…”
I left the thought unfinished as I sprinted from the room. They were all too stunned to ask questions at the moment, but that would change if I stuck around. Besides, if I had any hope of catching up to Carla, I had no time to waste.
