October 8th – dungeon

On choices.

Fox is having a rough morning.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Fox opened her eyes on a small cot, somewhere cool and damp. Stone floor, stone walls, barred window. She sighed internally. Nothing quite like waking up half-dead in a prison cell to start your day off right.
How many times could you wake up in a dungeon without having to rethink your life choices? She decided that the number probably hovered around one, which boded poorly for her. Better not to think too hard about it.
Besides, thinking was somewhat beyond her, at the moment. Her head throbbed. Actually, her entire body throbbed, her head was just the worst offender.
Fox tried to sit up, but couldn’t quite muster the strength to do so, so instead she sank back onto the bed with a groan.
There was a scrape of chair legs on stone and a moment later Av’ry appeared at the bars, a stern-faced guard shadowing his steps.
“You’re finally awake! You really had me worried this time, Fox,” he said.
“I’m not dead, then?” she croaked. “I wasn’t certain.”
“Not quite. Though it was a close thing.”

Subbing gulag for dungeon.
Katy asks the important questions
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WIPSnips
Finally, holy shite. If Yfaun’s dark matter gulag had been destroyed, was she just floating in space, about to die from no air, looking gross and freaky as she suffocated?

Graciela's book is down the line quite a bit, but she woke me up one night asking why she'd spent so much of her life making amends for and being bullied about her differences.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WIPSnips
Evind narrowed their eyes. “There’s a massive mistake in the delivery files. Shipments meant for Chitan ships were redirected to Centris and Zhujla.” At Graciela’s continued silence they went on, voice raising. “Everyone knows your grudge against Chitans since you were abandoned by them. I’m here to take you back to the warehouse, so you can explain what you did!”

She was utterly stumped. While she’d always faced some prejudice, assumptions of hidden anger toward the father who’d deserted her or a mother who didn’t even want to claim her, Graciela had never been confronted so aggressively. Uilig were calm by nature, once of the main reasons they were sought after as safehouse hosts throughout the Aoni, and this kind of vitriol was rare enough to be virgin territory. How on earth did she respond?

“I bloody well am going!”

“Katy, qania, be reasonable. We can’t leave-”

“You did not just tell me I’m unreasonable! I can’t believe you. Just because I’m Kawakona doesn’t mean I’m chained to this Wheel!”

Uh oh. Trouble in paradise already?

“What did I miss?” Yuhwa interrupted the argument as she spied Raisa Leon nearby, rolling her eyes.

“These two drank too much, or woke up out of sorts. They’ve been at loggerheads all morning.” Raisa made two fists and bumped them together.

Loggerhead Human English term to indicate either fights and/or stupidity, or amphibious life-form known as ‘turtle’.

I think I'm exactly the same :) If it gets too long, I stop thinking "I'll quite after 1 more chapter" and keep checking how long the current one is!

Calling on readers to share a preference on chapter length!
Do you like short, fast Chs - a 9 hour audiobook I'm reading is at 65% and we're already on Ch44.
Do you like slightly longer Chs - e.g. Jane Austen tends to be 3-4k words/Ch.
Or are you into the long Chs - a GoT, LOTR scenario.

Here they turned to Bay. “Your people were told by Windweaver White to seek the Kawakona. For that you’ve sentenced untold generations to wander isolated throughout the Aoni, unable to return home. My people were told to chase fragments of information, stories, mere rumors so we would know when our task actively engaged with the greater purpose. What is stored in the Lost Library has power, and in the wrong hands could have helped those who would like to ensure heralds never arise.” Suddenly their head resealed and all their arms jerked together, forming a near-solid trunk. As quickly as it happened it was undone, a full-body clench and release. “Pardons, this is momentous and I never dreamed to be part of it, so close to it. I am overcome.

Patrick and Vasuda, artists to their cores, were slowly circling the column before them, awestruck. “Look here, the filigree, it’s masterful. So fine and delicate.” Vasuda tugged on Patrick’s arm.

“We have to go,” Katy said. “We can spend more time admiring when we aren’t possibly being hunted by police.”

Bay grimaced. “Yes, everyone, inside.” He pushed a panel that was head-height for most of their group, and a solid panel slid away to reveal a compartment. Once they crowded in, the panel slid shut and the capsule, apparently an elevator, ascended.

Subbing asleep for hibernate in today's snip 💤😴💤 I could use a bed like a dao bed right about now
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WIPSnips
Paul could see a dao bed like Yuhwa used on the Eternidad inside. It was surrounded by twenty or so fancy leather loungers. The kind you’d lay on to mimic “zero g” and fall asleep, cradled like a baby.

Why do anatomical features and mythological tropes repeat across species? Katy learns about it over a nice dinner 🐟🍽️
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WIPSnips
Hours later, after drinks, a filling dinner of salmon and risotto, more education on the Aoni, and a tour of the refuge grounds, the sun was finally setting. This time of year in the PNW that meant it was nearly nine p.m. Their small group had adjourned to the outdoor fireplace. It was a temperate evening, and once Lanu had started the fire, Katy was comfortable with a light lap blanket, staring into the flames contemplatively.

Lanu and Bay were preparing beverages and stoking the fire, respectively. She’d learned so much and was reflecting on the latest bomb the two had dropped on her: most sentient, evolved species of the Aoni were symmetrical in features, bipedal, carbon-based and shared analogous core mythologies. This was because the Drazoen had seeded life throughout the Aoni, leaving genetically coded sense memories in their wake. Folklore and fairytales had similar themes throughout the Aoni as a result. Creation rising out of chaos? Dragons? Great floods? Fire as a gift from the gods? Check.

For her part, Yuhwa didn’t worry overmuch about the day the nawa called her to undertake a spiritual quest communing with the five animal avatars of Malor. All the mystical transcendence she needed was already in her grasp, every time she called upon the dao and swam through space and time. Just like the arnat zingo found in Malor river waters, Yuhwa swam the Aoni.

Humans discover the spaceship has a few animals hanging around 🐒
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WIPSnips
“What are those?” He rolled to his knees, inching closer to them. “They’re adorable.” He stopped moving. “Are they carnivorous? That’s what always happens in the movies, the cute ones go for your throat.”

Once the aoiti clarified “carnivorous” Yuhwa snorted. “They’re sweet, fruit and nut eaters. They aren’t native to the Mikanjo world, but long ago an Imen ambassador gifted a pack of them for this part of the ship. They’re called rufucebus, and if you bring them baijur crackle, they’ll swarm you and rub all over your hands to get the scent in their fur.”

“Roo-fah-see-bus?” Patrick said. “Like tiny monkeys, but with six sets of paws.”

Paul's first time in the numig, a spaceship's command center. He's about to watch Yuhwa "swim" a black hole from her dao bed. Her process is vaguely described in book 1, book 2 will explain much more
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WIPSnips
So long as he told himself he was inside a planetarium, Paul didn’t think he’d fall down. But shite, this numig thing was mind-bending. Multiple stories, flashing lights, walkways leading to a center platform with terminals and a raised dais bearing some kind of couch-bed deal. All of it under a clear dome with a view of distant stars. Not a hint of Earth to be seen.
