I write Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror that is slightly bent, a bit fun and certain to be an adventure. I also art. I am currently illustrating chapter headers for "The Inspectors." Nevada! NO AI here. DMs closed!
Pinned
Bug Mage Art - Destine bookmark in color. I will let it rest over thanksgiving to see if I need to touch it more. Enjoy!
When you publish an e-book, recognize you are effectively sacrificing it to AI scraping. You garner 'cheap' sales as your trade off. If you don't publish to e-book your sales will decline and your 'brand will not reach' as many readers. Make careful choices.

Remember, the AI companies have a policy of steal your work first, ask permission last or never. Your novel in easy electronic form makes them money. They have no intention of ever paying for your work. Don't act surprised. The process of that theft raises your electric bill too.

My latest copyright registration is now at over six months. The check has not yet been processed. This means the LoC is not actually working. DOGE effectively shut it down for regular business. File anyway. Keep records that document you followed procedures.

With nearly all large internet tech companies in support of fascism we are in an era where the majority of book selling is in the literal control of these companies. Fascists don't like access to books and education by the masses. YOU are the masses.

The live markets you table at in your own city/town may be the only time locals can purchase your book after handling it in person. Building word-of-mouth is increasingly difficult with the reduction in bricks-and-mortar new book stores, with the reduction in paper magazines.

My city has just under 300,000 citizens. We have 11 listed bookstores and one is christian, one is a comic store, one is our University bookstore. We lost at least two last year, one nearly 50 years old.

If you buy your books while browsing a bookstore...

As you approach your launch date you want your novel to show up all over in interviews, podcasts, on popular vlogs, in advertising, at any place you believe (through research) your likely buying readers will frequent or find your book. This means a year of research.

At the point of planning your launch date - your novel is finished, pro edited, pro cover, and in the process of publication. Don't CHANGE your launch date - pre plan to have it in hand before your launch date. You need to be trustworthy to your readers.

You add to your calendar due dates on promotional materials and estimated real life costs for each. These will include static ads (book cover, blurb, qr code to website) this will include a novel trailer and any swag materials you are having manufactured.

The reason you choose genre magazines is because they have subscription readers who PAY for what they read. These are paying readers within your genre. You want them to see your excellent book cover and blurb presented in a way that suggests quality.

Then you need to talk to your magazine site to find out what their deadline is for ordering and paying for an ad. This will be months ahead. You mark that date and price on your calendar and allow 10% price increase. You may have several of these.

In the month of your marketing efforts you will likely be running expensive 1/4 - full page ads of your novel. These are usually over $1,000 each (maybe much more) so you start your planning year by pricing out where you plan to run a real ad.

The most important dates in your writing calendar are launch dates for novels.

A novel launch date is when your yearlong marketing efforts for your novel reach their peak. Everything you spend marketing money on needs to land in preorders and purchases.

I encourage you to buy or make a paper calendar.

That's step one.

Pick out important dates on the year you already know.

This is a writing marketing calendar. Focus on writing dates of some kind.

After you choose dates, then you work backwards.

It's a glorious, fabulous Tuesday.

Tuesday's are FREE write days where you can write absolutely anything and not feel guilty about it.

Today we are talking about planning in a yearly way on your marketing journey. As usual, we start backwards.

Winter prep also includes parking my snow shovels next to each outside door. Keeping rock salt nearby.

I 'hope' to have my driveway de-weeded before snow. And to have tree parts hauled off. Mostly everything else is ready to go outside. How is your winter prep going today?

Today I emptied my vehicle at donation and gave the guy unloading a $10 tip. He was thrilled and a grin escaped. I then did quarter car wash and vacuum on my car. I need to buy new wipers this week and have my fluids changed. Then I did groceries and bird food. Busy morning.

Practice your pitch until you know your patter and are comfortable saying it. Learn to look friendly and approachable. Learn to engage in positive ways. Learn how to move some people along who block others from reaching you and buying from you.

Script your pitch. You will be asked:

* what's your novel about?
* how long did it take to write?
* is it okay for young readers?
* does it include trigger warnings?
* how did you get inspired?
* what are you writing now?

People attending to markets and cons like to spend money on local creators. Have clothing that is casual presentable. Get a hair cut. Brush your teeth. Have a table kit that includes scissors, pens, scotch tape, notepads, safety pins and small clamps and hard candies.

PLEASE store your books inside in a temp/humidity controlled environment (not your garage or shed)

Keep all of your market goodies stored in plastic totes inside and well marked and accessible. No panic to find stuff the day of. You will already be nervous.

Purchase at least 50 books from your publisher to have copies on hand. Purchase a package of sharpie markers and practice your autograph on scrap paper.

Purchase at least a few hundred business cards.
Design bookmarks for swag or sales.
Buy decor for the table.

You should have a business bank account for book sales. Set it up so that all your transactions pass into this account. This costs money too and your time. Do it anyway.

You improve your marketing by starting early, planning well, having good preparations.

Lots of writers are social introverts. This means that they feel awkward tabling and talking to the public. Practice. You need the FANS for your fan list. Learn how to table and bring a support person to help you until you know you can handle it.

The lead time for market applications can be over six months ahead. Line up which ones you want to try for early and have the money for the table early. Did I tell you to save money every single Monday?

You will need business cards and branded promotional stuff.
