The thing I love most about writing is when you don't know what's going to come out of your fingertips next, or exactly where you're going, and you write a line that's *close,* but not quite there.

The stone temple was smaller than the wooden one that was built within the Uesn village, but it was still big enough to fit many series of people. Yet Tokonus could not help but feel a sense of claustrophobia under the gaze of the stained-glass windows. The young lord was not beholden to any other divine than the True Mother, but that did not quell the anxieties that bubbled up inside him. Tokonus was uncertain the length of the ceremony, but he only hoped that it would not last. This space with its pews, statues, and holy servants in their sacred garb did not feel safe – not for the Lukshen; not for the stranger.

I wonder if the same is happening to me, when the stars around us become bright blue and surge towards us. Brilliant blue particles speed past. I look to the side to see the particles flash from blue to white to red as they pass by the ship. I want to say ‘What kind of Star Trek crap is this?’ but all I can manage out of my throat is a strained “Gnhhgh!” Only then do I notice my hands clenching on the seat-belts for dear life. I consciously try to loosen their grip to no avail. “Here it comes!” Driona says a bit indistinctly and I look up and ahead again. A massive blue-green gas giant with rings twice as spectacular as Saturn’s fly directly towards us, as if some god had plucked it from the surrounding solar system and thrown a fast ball directly at my head. My whole body clenches up as I’m expecting the gigantic planet to crash into the ship. Somehow I’m unable to scream.

“The moon is predictable. It’s not hard to learn its patterns, I have always paid attention to the patterns of light,” I say, suddenly very aware of how weird I must sound. Aren't people supposed to talk about weird things while high? “Are you sure you are not autistic?” “Pretty sure, maybe one day they will invent a better test and diagnose me. I just appreciate how perfect our moon is. Did you know our planet is the only one in the solar system that’s moon is the same size as the sun, from our perspective anyway. It allows for one hundred percent totality during a solar eclipse. It is almost mathematically impossible yet it happens here, on a planet with sentient life that can understand its rarity. I think that is beautiful, I don’t care if it makes me sound autistic,” I say and feel the weight of Mel’s gaze upon me. She is sizing me up again, but not as a threat. She is trying to understand me as a curiosity.

“No, don’t move,” Tom insisted. “The medics will be there in a few minutes, and if they don’t find you in that car seat, I will make sure they hold you overnight in the med center for observation. See if I don’t.” “Fine, I’m staying put.” “Good. Because if you don’t get back here in one piece, I won’t be able to kill you myself.” “It’s sweet that you care.” I leaned my head back against the headrest and closed my eyes. Everything hurt, kind of like I had been hit by a car, appropriately enough. It would be nice to just rest for a few minutes. And that was when I heard the whoosh of the gasoline igniting. I could not catch a break today. I muted my earpiece and swore colorfully. A spark from the electrical system, or heat from one of the engines must have caught the leaking gas. Flames licked the outside of my car. I couldn’t stay here, or I would cook. I wrenched the door open and stumbled out, then glanced back at the other car. The succubus hadn’t moved. If I left her there, she would burn alive. Perhaps a fitting end for her, but I couldn’t just sit here and let her die.

FYI: "sah" in this culture is the address for children & subordinates. As the gods, Mireia & Kena are expected to address everyone as "sah," but Mimi gives it some extra oomph here.

“I’ve heard rumors that you intend to, ah... free the slaves?” This question, spoken in a vaguely mocking tone, was directly at Mireia—only at Mireia. She opened her mouth to reply, but Kena spoke first, not hiding the annoyance in his voice. “We intend to, yes.” The lord’s eyes begrudgingly turned to Kena, and his thin mouth twitched, the trace of a smile becoming first a frown, and then a different kind of smile—polite but stony. “I see,” said the Obsidian man, in a more serious tone. “I must admit, I was hoping you might reassure me that these rumors were untrue. Are you certain that—?” “We are certain, sah,” Mireia said sharply, with emphasis on the sah. “I only wonder if you’ve thought about—” “We know it will be difficult,” Kena cut him off. “But we feel it must be done.” The man’s smile somehow became stonier. “You are both still so young, and the young are always full of idealism. That’s one of the beauties of this system of ours, ona? Every generation gets a new pair of gods with fresh eyes and hopeful dreams, who haven’t yet been jaded by the world. Without Mu’u and Raa, relics like myself would never be forced to change, and our society would stagnate. I appreciate that—honestly, I do. But idealism must ever be tempered with realism, young gods. And, while the idea of freeing the slaves is a noble goal, I don’t feel that it’s very realistic.” He took a sip of wine, then glanced at Mireia. “Sea Mother, you especially ought to consider how this will look. There are already many out there who believe that your mixed blood makes you too partial to the barbarians. What will they say if you do this?” “They can say whatever they like about me,” Mireia said. “It doesn’t change what’s right.”

Ready for that anatomy exam?” Boy am I glad Chloe isn’t here, because she’d never let this opportunity slip without saying something like why don’t you help her study some anatomy personally. “Nearly,” I answer, flipping through my notes and willing away the flush in my face. About an hour in, I’m testing my memory of a mammalian lymphatic system chart when Hart’s deep voice interrupts my train of thought. “Your focus is incredible.” I peer up and blink, like I’m stepping into daylight. He’s watching me with a hand draped across his cheek and half his mouth. The other half curves up, and color blooms on my cheeks. “You have this…mode,” he says. “Like your brain has binoculars.” I snort. “Mundy actually calls it Danbi-vision. I was always trying to get my homework done at school so I wouldn’t have to lug so many books to the store, and he always said he wanted to capture my laser focus, code it into a robot, and name the feature Danbi-vision.” “Store?” “My aunt and uncle’s. I worked there.” I train my eyes back on the chart, wondering if he’ll ask another question, unsure whether I want him to. Hart drags his elbows up over the edge of the table and leans in, tugging my gaze back up. “Mundy has his work cut out for him. Seems like trying to bottle lightning.”

They stretched out their hands to her, and she brushed their fingers. “I am Mu’u Jasana,” she said. “I am the True Sea Mother, the one you heard prophesied of. I know how many of you have suffered in the dark, but you are free now. I have set you free. The false Sea Mother Mireia imprisons her children, and that is how you know she is false. But I am the bringer of freedom and hope. That is how you know I am true. “For far too long, the corrupt elites of this land have convinced you to follow weak impostors. They’ve told you that Atalantis must remain isolated, that our power is something to be hidden away and ashamed of. But the truth is the opposite: your power is a gift! You are my children, the firstborn of the Sun and Sea, and you were never meant to stay hidden away on this lonely island. You were meant to claim dominion over the whole world and all its lesser creatures. This is the great destiny that was always intended for you, but it has been thwarted by small people who want to hoard power for themselves.” Murmurs of righteous anger swelled through the rebels at these words. Jasana, reaching the far end of the room, climbed up onto a table and turned to her people. Though she was small, she towered, a figure of natural power and charisma. On her way across the city, the modest elegance of the Parc des Temps captured Briaca’s attention. Cypress and pomegranate trees and beds of white mulberries garlanded the park whose smaller scale meant little before its open-air exhibition of global curiosities: a decorative replica of a pyramid from Kemet (many of the real ones had melted during the Vengeance), a compact yurt from Tourkia, a pond surrounded by lilies with a tiny pagoda at its centre gifted by Kinézika allies. None of it was the real thing, yet Briaca enjoyed strolling through the park and imagining what life was like in those places she had never been to. As a decorated soldier of Aphrodite, she had travelled across and beyond Soliakó, but brandishing the sword in the name of the Mother Goddess left little time to explore. And when she did… well, not everyone showed a willingness to talk to her. Zoé once blamed it on all the fresh blood on her armour and sword, but that couldn’t be it. Briaca always made sure to smile at them! Why would they be scared?

Shaken, Jedhrath turned toward the camp. As his heart began to thaw, he dreaded the prospect of hours alone. After the ecstasy of union with everyone and everything, his actual detachment from others— his discreteness as an entity-depressed him, made him terribly lonely, and filled him with homelonging so overwhelming he felt he might collapse in the snow. To distract himself he looked for familiar faces, but all he could see were Lord Shelwon's receding back and Ra'am Chalmalch's baleful eyes. What was wrong? The Ra'am had kept it out of the prayers and rites, but Jedhrath could tell by his stare and the set of his mountainous shoulders that all was not well, that he was displeased; and that the object of his displeasure was the man on whom the hope of the ENTIRE WORLD of Rhadhallon rested. That maybe somewhere there's another girl and her uhh”—she elbowed him in the ribs and he shied away, grinning—“trusty sidekick.” She chuckled once, but the smile slipped from her face as she contemplated the distance between them and the heavens. “Only, they're dining on the best foods out there, maybe dancing in moonlit halls. Wearing clothes made of starlight…” She trailed off, and Shrimp turned to look at her. She glanced at him. “Okay, yeah, you're right, that may be a bit too much, but anything's possible out there in them other worlds, right? ‘Specially if it's in a different time.” She sighed and shook her head, but she met Shrimp's gaze—saw the frown digging between his brows—and offered a small, encouraging smile. “Well, I don't know if you dream, but that's what I see when I close my eyes at night.” She grabbed his hand and held tight. “All them silly renderings in the stars.”

Aubergine desperately trying to regain the psychic bond to his best friend who he last knew was thousands of miles away and captured by an enemy army
Silence deeper than death. Quieter than the Hollow Void. He meditated, allowing his mind to fly free through the dominion, to soar with eagles and albatrosses, then dive like a cormorant into Deep Sea and descend with megamobulas and anglerfish, to explore parallel realities and dominions that his body could not enter. All in search of the one life—the one soul—that contained within it the entirety of Aubergine’s universe. Iom’ren… Aubergine’s heart leapt so hard it choked him. Out loud, but with the low frequency voice that only Subrikae could speak or hear, he said the name of his friend. To anyone who might have heard him—if they could hear him over the droning organ—it would have sounded like a cat’s purr. Aubergine drawn by Flare Aubergine from the Good Thyme Inn books. A dark-skinned man dressed all in purple, sitting at a bar with wine and grapes. He has jewels in his face and stunning pink eyes almost hidden in the shade of his hat. Behind him is the dining room area and a hearth fire burning with green flame. The way his eyes are glowing under the shade of his hat gives him an ethereal, otherworldly presence. He is a gorgeous, mysterious man.

“Cassia said the realms are like two sides of the same coin,” Chloe says. “So where exactly on the globe are we?” Marine takes another swallow of her drink and smiles. “Miterios can only survive in places where the natural balance hasn’t been destroyed in the Other Realm. Poetic, isn’t it? Osse is around the Gobi Desert, Pleumon in the Amazon, and Podia around the Great Barrier Reef. And in the Sun Federation, Kheir is in southern Africa, and Rhakhis is spread across Iceland and Greenland.” Understanding dawns on me. I’ve seen enough maps of national parks and wildlife preservation areas to know that there are swaths of protected lands in those places. “And Kardia,” Marine continues, “is mostly in Alaska.” My eyes go round. My stomach drops. I whip my gaze around to Chloe, who stares at me with her mouth ajar. Alaska. Where my father’s body was inexplicably found. Where my father disappeared to after declaring he was returning home. The world beyond the bark. The reading. I must return home. It can’t just be a coincidence. I down the rest of my drink. And even if I don’t yet have the proof, my brain’s already chanting: My father lived in Kardia.
