Every time something like the GOP chat leak occurs I hear smart people arguing that shame could be a useful tactic. But shame only works if the bad actors think their actions are bad. Hypocrisy, shame, these Victorian-ish norms are just that, norms, guardrails, and they don't work against fascism.

My friends today have Ivy graduate degrees; I have the innate intelligence and work ethic to have been there with them, but because I didn’t know as an undergrad that one should go to office hours to build relationships with profs, for example, and had to direct my own career, I missed out. A lot.

My parents were uneducated but very high IQ, and yet there’s a direct line between their lack of awareness and experience with grad school and the end of my academic career. (Mom’s *only* advice for me after getting my BA in 1990 was to, “Get a job as a secretary.”)

Good grief. “Sir” and “ma’am” are widely used as a polite honorific in many parts of the country. (It’s one of the things I had to adjust to when moving east, from Calif., so I can understand how it may sound jarring. Even so, this is a silly criticism. Suggest saving your venom for the bad guys.)
