As a former smoker, I do understand the increased health issues.
Insurers have, for many years, charged significantly higher premiums for smokers, and indeed heavy drinkers.
These elective vices constitute an unnecessary impost on our health system, and should be reflected under Medicare co-payment
politikarma.bsky.social
Smokers incur significant healthcare costs due to smoking-related diseases. These costs are estimated at $2.6 billion annually for treating 25 smoking-related conditions.
Smoking costs the economy close to $137 billion, which includes both tangible costs (like healthcare and lost productivity)

This is the sort of research a well-funded & reinvigorated #CSIRO could have undertaken…amongst many.
Instead in @albomp.bsky.social we have a mediocre, penny- pinching neoliberal PM whose only ambition is to keep his own seat warm, and his beloved @australianlabor.bsky.social in office.

This is so embarrassing for President Prabowo of Indonesia too. He left many urgent domestic issues behind to attend Gaza Peace Summit

reduce tax on cigarettes BUT significantly increase Medicare levy on smokers.
Will eliminate elicit trade, deter smokers & subsidise treatment of their increased health risks

The #CSIRO budget for R&D projects should be increased considerably.
Apart from the break throughs it can achieve, it provides a great career path for talented graduates

Private sector takes the shortest path to the largest profit, and knocks down and pushes aside anything that gets in its way (like regulations).
Government initiatives can be managed more efficiently and cost effectively.
Just takes recruitment of capable senior management with commercial expertise

“Last 40 yrs adopted neoliberal economic ideology that focused on assumed advantages of private sector and alleged inability of public sector to match its entrepreneurial and efficiency advantages. That ideology deliberately ignored the role of the public sector.”

A new study published in Nature Climate Action finds Woodside’s Scarborough gas project could cause 100s of heat-related deaths & exposed 500k people to unprecedented heat.

Govt can’t claim climate leadership while approving projects like this.

Forrest-backed study links Woodside mega-project to hundreds of deaths
The research, conducted by academics at ANU, suggests the massive offshore gas project off the coast of Western Australia will cause warming of 0.00039 degrees.

Fact.
We are languishing under a govt led by a visionless, risk-averse, deeply institutionalised career party apparatchik who is incapable of delivering big, bold, transformational policy - which the people of Australia crave.
Voters should not reward mediocrity and inertia
politikarma.bsky.social
For his own financial benefit

Ironic Nats are silent on endemic land clearing by farmers & graziers & ignore burgeoning gas fracking sector in SW QLD which is more environmentally destructive than renewables infrastructure - for which landowners are handsomely rewarded and which supplements their income from farming activities
politikarma.bsky.social
The march of renewables is irreversible.
Many in Central QLD are addicted to the fossil fuel sector (coal) because it’s traditionally paid well & contributed to communities.
Opposition to renewables based on land clearing for infrastructure is hypocritical given land never recovers from coal mining
