Pinned post time! :D I am a scientist and author based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada -- I write about gods, monsters, magic, science, and people running in circles screaming "WHAT IS THAT WHAT IS IT DON'T LET IT TOUCH ME"

My Bookstore bookshop is here! :)

Books I wrote, books I'm in! Not in any kind of order mostly.

“One person was bitten by the bat and is now seeking medical care, the county said… Any direct contact with a bat should be treated as a potential exposure, even if there is no visible bite or scratch, according to the county’s news release.”
Rabid bat bites person in southeast Michigan
The rabid bat found in St. Clair County has triggered warnings from health officials who say even minor contact with bats can be dangerous.

I would say that, basically, you have hit the nail on the head as to why (some) writers drink

Anyway I have like TWO WEEKS TO RE-LEARN FRENCH (AGAIN) and I am as far as "BONJER HI!" which is currently the entirety of my vocabulary 😩

(I actually, as discussed, did NOT quit my real job to 'write full time.' I already knew that wasn't going to be sustainable, because I'm very good at math. I more sort of fell into this by accident, and am now "Oh ha ha, I am coming apart at the seams AND not selling books, yikes on bikes.")

But anyway, it WAS a fun experiment, I met a lot of cool people and went to some places I never would have gone otherwise (Barcelona! Moose Jaw!) and have SO many writerly friends now. :D Maybe I will write better books in the future!

-- like, *I* certainly don't like every book I pick up, and would never expect people to like *mine.* It's just, books are how I'm paying the bills these days and my health has deteriorated to the point where teaching/speaking is not really do-able. So there's a little more at stake now.

In Banff we talked about how the best driver of book sales and big deals is word of mouth: people like your books and recommend them to others.

So if my books aren't selling, guess what? Womp womp. This is not a super big deal, honestly, because --

The publishing experiment of "Hey I wonder if I'm publishable" seems to have been answered with
a) yes, but
b) "Write better books, assclown" 😆

This isn't 'my worst' royalty report btw, this is just a relatively recent and representative one. Even if my entire backlist were earning $210 per book per six month period, I'd still be starving to death. It is what it is! And anyway it's useful experimental data.

"What do you mean" Well sometimes people ask me "So, do awards help with book sales?" and anyway, not universally. I definitely do NOT believe that I (or indeed any author!) am entitled to book sales. But I, uh. Can't live on mine. :)
a screencap from the ISFDB showing 'highest ranks authors and editors since 1950 by decade,' then the top 12 list showing premee mohamed at #3 for the 2020s. then a royalty statement indicating $209.10 total earned over a six month period, and, quite reasonably, an arrow pointing to a beetle with a clown face labeled 'me'

LOL it's not even stability, it literally is just dollars

Thank you for the kind words!

But there's a million billion squillion undergrads! They're the more sustainable resource!

If you assessed the risk and said "Well, it's only one undergrad, that's collateral damage basically," it's still science
romanpalace.bsky.social
Did you risk assess it?
If you risk assessed it, it was science.

I adore her little face

She always seems so surprised, still, to find herself in the world

I keep hearing this from people who took an MFA! Like "Yeah we learned A but didn't learn B, C, or D for some odd reason"

Or "We were taught A through D, but not how publishing works" etc
premeemohamed.com
But honestly it never gets less funny to say "Yeah no I have two science degrees and no arts degrees, let's fuckin GOOOOOOOOO" (as I open my powerpoint slides)
