Soybean is widely grown in the US because it is a nitrogen fixing cash crop with substantial demand that is easy to grow, easy to harvest, and can be used in crop rotation in many regions.

Love this breakdown from Sarah about what is happening with the US soybean market
sarahtaber.bsky.social
US farmers are saying they "just need temporary help, until things get better."

Here's the thing. US farm exports- which are mostly soy- CANNOT get better.

Other countries expanded their soy industries to fill China's demand.

We've walled ourselves out of the global market, folks. This is it.

Yeah this too.

Trump bailed Argentina's soy farmers.

THREAD.

Saw that story earlier today that Argentina took that "bailout" money the admin offered and immediately sold soybeans to China, which in prior years they would have bought from the U.S. We're cooked.

Maybe we should acknowledge that each region, even each farm, has different input needs and stop turning “regenerative farming” into an elitist model.
progressispurpose.bsky.social
It seems that only small farmers can grow regeneratively, but when large corporations adopt crop rotation and reduced pesticide practices, it is greenwashing.

The panel is discussing making the parameters around regenerative farming more strict to separate who is doing is right.
progressispurpose.bsky.social
Listening to a panel on regenerative agriculture and I have to ask, does gatekeeping these practices really help the movement to better farming?

Problems this Trump Admin is creating for farmers are more severe than first. Costs are increasing for farmers of all types and sizes. Any trade aid program should be much broader. Loss of some export markets may not be temporary. Fear is land prices will drop. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
American Farmers Are Feeling the Pain of Trump’s Policies
US agricultural communities that had expected Trump to have their backs have found themselves flung into a second trade war. If the situation continues, it could put loyalties at risk.

We can't allow ourselves to become numb to mass shootings. What happened today in Minneapolis is heartbreaking, and Michelle and I are praying for the parents who have lost a child or will be sitting at their hospital bedside after yet another act of unspeakable, unnecessary violence.

We have been somewhat spoiled by being able to have such a large variety of food options and with climate change destroying crops and our government implementing policies that affect local production/imports, a lot of things just aren’t going to be available or affordable in the near future.

Food systems are central to everything, from climate to social justice. But why are we still so far off track on global goals, and what can the upcoming U.N. Food Systems Summit do to turn the tide?

This is horrible news for independent farmers who rely on diverse income opportunities to stay afloat.

The government’s own research shows that renewable energy is not a threat to food security, but they don’t care because “green” is “woke” apparently

What about all the people who buy a few extra cans of vegs for food drives? Is that considered averting waste because the food is donated?

This seems like jumping on the carbon credit bandwagon to increase revenue streams for food banks.

Food banks have long prevented emissions. Now they’re getting into the carbon credit business.

To stay afloat, food banks in the Global South are considering selling controversial offsets for revenue.
