Speaking of film formats, I recently published an article on Pola-Lite, a largely unnoticed and under-researched single-strip 3-D format, in Film Atlas, an encyclopedia of every film format ever.

I had a blast researching this. It has everything! Monsters, Douglas Sirk, questionable origin stories!

Even the news often chases a cinematic aesthetic. Some do not, of course. I highlighted last year (and I should dig into more) the intentional eschewing of filmic formal qualities by certain orgs (especially politicians) to suggest a less produced and therefore homier and “trustworthy” quality.

An excellent and insightful thread.

This statement, in particular, highlights something I think about a lot on the other side of the aisle as a film historian when folks bemoan the death of movies. “It’s all streaming!” “No one goes to the movies.” And yet, film’s formal qualities are everywhere.

TV today seems so desperate to be that dreadful word: ‘cinematic’. ‘We’ve got new lenses to make it look cinematic’. ‘Our lighting will make this series more cinematic.’ 3/
