Patches on her arms turned from sandy brown to sickly orange, alerting her to run.

Another firestorm was fast approaching - they always did, during dry season.

Amid shouted instructions, she circled an ancient tree, dropping to all fours at its concealed burrow. Into it she crawled, letting the thick moss carpet fall back over the entrance, shutting out daylight.

At last in the familiar darkness, her reaching fingertips sank into the sentient tree’s gelatinous centre, where she’d shelter until the storm had passed.

“My nutrients are yours, old friend,” she murmured, and slid up into the oxygen-rich core.

I put on 9GOATS BLACK OUT's TANATOS and Mr.Unknown's Amnesiac's Nothingness while writing more of Rampion this morning... both utterly dark, delectable albums.

I then played Stardew Valley and watched most of The Haunting of Bly Manor while knitting my yearly scarf, Scout dozing nearby ♡

I went to see Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein this afternoon at the theatre and it was a film of horrific beauty. My heart aches for Creature, and this film truly gave him voice, an agency both brutal and beautiful. I can't wait to watch this masterful adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic again.

I spent the next couple days with a bad back, dealing with jet lag... thanks to a lot of sleep and a lot of help from my chiropractor, I now feel somewhat normal again and can get back to writing 💀✨

CAN*CON at the spacious new location felt so relaxed, and my pitch session with Ashley of Wolsak & Wynn was lovely (nervous as I had felt beforehand, the conversation itself was so warm and welcoming).

And it was great to see so many friends, Writers of Ottawa peeps, and make new acquaintences!

Certain deep bass sound waves are capable of putting out fires with specialized speakers (rather than water or chemicals) by shaking oxygen molecules away from fire molecules and are currently being tested for more widespread use. So badass.
